#12booksin2021 #July21 was also a starry month,but the one that shone the brightest for me was the absolutely delightful book on the historic Savoy.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4138001519
I also loved a delightful book on a storied bookshop in Algiers,a book of essays on 80s that explored the entertainment explosion,a haunting work on a woman's obsession with preserving youth.

Una lettura particolare, che solo alla fine riusciamo a comprendere appieno, anche se verso la fine intuiamo parecchi dettagli. L'autrice riesce a creare un intricata storia, apparentemente banale, che però nasconde la verità terribile che porterà la protagonista dietro le sbarre....

It started so well with the trial of a woman accused of murdering her much younger lover and the patronising and judgemental attitudes towards her because of her age and gender but it didn't live up to it's promise. As we explore Gladys' life it seems to reveal Némirovsky's own internalised misogyny 👇

Moray_Reads Gladys is self-centred in such a simplistic, negative way & this may be partly society's doing but the writer has so little sympathy it turns into an old-fashioned morality tale. This is obviously just proving how strong such attitudes were (and are) but there's a lack of character subtlety that is surprising in NĂŠmirovsky and a plot that becomes painfully obvious in the final third. 7y

I found a new-to-me used book shop. The place was cramped and hard to navigate because of the boxes and stacks of books everywhere! The shelves were crammed overfull. It was AMAZING. Here was my haul. Any thoughts?
