The Late Bloomers' Club
The Late Bloomers' Club: A Novel | Louise Miller
26 posts | 27 read | 31 to read
A delightful novel about two headstrong sisters, a small-town's efforts to do right by their community, and the power of a lost dog to conjure up true love Nora, the owner of the Miss Guthrie diner, is perfectly happy serving up apple cider donuts, coffee, and eggs-any-way-you-like-em to her regulars, and she takes great pleasure in knowing exactly what's ?the usual." But her life is soon shaken when she discovers she and her younger, free-spirited sister Kit stand to inherit the home and land of the town's beloved cake lady, Peggy Johnson. Kit, an aspiring--and broke--filmmaker needs to generate funding for her latest project, and is particularly keen when they find out Peggy was in the process of selling the land to a big-box developer before her death. The people of Guthrie are divided--some want the opportunities the development will bring, while others are staunchly against any change--and they aren't afraid to leave their opinions with their tips. Time is running out, and the sisters need to make a decision soon. But Nora isn't quite ready to let go of the land, complete with a charming farmhouse, an ancient apple orchard and clues to a secret life that no one knew Peggy had. Troubled by the conflicting needs of the town, and confused by her growing feelings towards Elliot, the big-box developer, Nora throws herself into solving the one problem that everyone in town can agree on--finding Peggy's missing dog, Freckles. When a disaster strikes the diner, the community of Guthrie bands together to help her, and Nora discovers that doing the right thing doesn't always mean giving up your dreams.

This is a very sweet novel set in a small New England town. It‘s kind of a Mayberry setting, people are so community minded and so friendly. Nora runs the diner she inherited from her parents and at 42 is unsurprisingly unhappy with her life. Circumstances change when she and her prodigal sister inherit a substantial property from a relative stranger. But I love this kind of palate cleanser and enjoyed this gentle romance. A sweet escape 👍👍 🐉

This was the Modern Mrs Darcy book club pick for January. I‘m giving it a pick because it was cute and I stayed interested in the main character. I also liked that there were real issues in the book, like the fact that an inheritance might bring its own set of problems. The setting is the kind of small town that only exists on Gilmore Girls. I grew up in a small town, and it wasn‘t like this at all! It‘s nice to imagine though.

Cozy feel good book about two sisters who‘ve taken very different paths centered in a small Vermont town. Fairly predictable but I think I needed the peace and quiet and predictability of a book about small town life. And now I want a piece of burnt sugar maple cake!

I‘m enjoying this sweet little novel about a small town in Vermont and two polar opposite sisters, one of whom is an artistic risk taker who has traveled widely and the other who has been the family caretaker and has developed deep ties to their hometown. And I‘m almost always impressed when a novelist can work in a Rumi quote.

Cute but pretty predictable romantic tale.

From the Publisher:
Nora, the owner of the Miss Guthrie Diner, is perfectly happy serving up apple cider donuts, coffee, and eggs-any-way-you-like-em to her regulars, and she takes great pleasure in knowing exactly what‘s “the usual.” But her life is soon shaken when she discovers she and her free-spirited, younger sister Kit stand to inherit the home and land of the town‘s beloved cake lady.

I‘m not sure where this title fits in with the story, but I LOVE this book. The characters are very relatable, and I enjoyed the little town too. I would love to revisit these people and this place again.

5☆ The cover has nothing to do with the story so I'm glad a friend told me Louise Miller had a new title out. Just like in 'The City Baker's Guide To County Living' it feels the Gilmore Girls' Stars Hallow, unique festivals, secrets, coming together. Sigh, so good. Gonna go make Burnt Sugar Cake with Maple Frosting now. Yum!

I couldn‘t help but think of Gilmore Girls MULTIPLE times while reading this- and for me, that works! 😊 It has quirky characters, a small town, a love interest, a dog, and a happy ending. The comfort food of books.

I had read too many books in a row that left me feeling run over by a truck. Decided to hunt down this book because she has become my comfort author. The author is a pastry chef in Boston who knows my neck of the Vermont woods very well. She knows about the value that each person contributes to a small town and writes of it in a way that‘s not too syrupy sweet. Both Vermont and kindness are major players in this book. It was a breath of fresh air.

Suet624 If you like the Gilmore Girls I bet you would enjoy this book. 6y

And unexpectedly wonderful "feel good" book! arriving at this point in her life almost without any pre-planning or thought, just life evolving an aura was along for the ride. Nora seems content with where she is at and what she is doing. It's not until everything is shaken up and turned upside down, and Nora is given the choice to make a change, to reinvent herself, that she realizes that what she really wants most is what she already had. ?

Suet624 I really liked her first book too. 6y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @Suet624 , thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to check that one out! 6y
Suet624 I also heard a third book is coming out soon. I‘ve been reading some disturbing books lately. I really appreciate coming up for air and settling down with her books. Plus she writes about the part of Vermont that I live in so I feel as if goodness is possible, at least in my little section of the world. 6y
