This is an important novel for New Zealand - culturally and historically - it seems wrong to give it a critical review. This is a debut novel - i think her second novel is more balanced. Incl an excerpt from the NZ Herald for background. The novel is told with 3 POVs - Mere, Lula and an ancestral spirit. Mere‘s story is beautifully told but it peters out -Lula and the spirit get most of the second half of the book. I can see that Makereti wants ⬇️

Centique to show a way to recognise and make a way forward from the historic trauma - but it does feel more forced snd over explained. Still a 5 star read in some parts, 3 stars towards the end. 1y

Mere and Iraia run away to Wellington (1880s). Lulu and Bigs twins (1980‘s-90‘s). Do up a house in Rēkohu. Moriori, Māori and Pākehā. Brilliant

I finished this book a few days ago and have been thinking about it since. It deals with a part of New Zealand‘s history that I had no idea about. Makereti has a clever way of showing the complexities some people deal with when they are of mixed cultures; in this case Maori/Maoriori/Pakeha. I highly recommend this book, esp. if you‘re a kiwi! Even if you‘re not from NZ this book is beautifully written and evokes a real sense of the NZ landscape.
