The Frost Fair
The Frost Fair | Edward Marston
3 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
The Frozen River Thames gives up its secrets Christmas, 1669. In the grip of the coldest winter for years, the Thames is frozen from bank to bank and London celebrates with the traditional Frost Fair held on its broad back. Among the throng are Christopher Redmayne, an ambitious young architect, and his good friend, Constable Jonathan Bale. But the pair make a chilling discovery: the frozen corpse of a naked man embedded in the ice. Christopher is further drawn into the mystery when his own brother is accused of the murder. With his brother facing execution, the architect must risk all he holds dear, both professionally and personally, to uncover the truth.

Pickpick

This story revolves around Henry Redmayne, brother of Christopher. While not so interesting or exciting in the first half as the previous books in the series, I was getting a little disappointed. The twists and turns and attacks on both the brothers helped rescue the story and with amorous advances coming from unexpected quarters along with some amusing moments the outcome was once again a very enjoyable read.

For my #Fair have chosen one of my reads earlier this month. We have to go back to the period after the Fire of London in 1666 and a Frost Fair is taking place on the frozen River Thames, when a young boy looks down and sees a body in the ice. Christopher Redmayne seeks to find the murderer to save his brother and his family‘s reputation. Love the Christopher Redmayne series, Shame there is only 6 of them.

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I like this series, and his Railway Detective series. Quite light easy reading. @Crazeedi (edited) 5y
Andrew65 My wife enjoys his Nicholas Bracewell Series, set in the Elizabethan period, but I haven‘t tried that yet. @Tove_Reads @Crazeedi https://www.fantasticfiction.com/m/edward-marston/ 5y

1669, and the Thames is frozen. London celebrates with a frost fair on the river. But when a child slips on the ice, the body of a naked man #frozen underneath is discovered. With his friend Constable Bale under suspicion, it‘s down to architect Christopher Redmayne to clear his name.

TrishB Reminded me I have a book about the frozen Thames I could have used! 5y
Leniverse This sounds interesting. Except that... while the Thames might have frozen over that winter I believe the ice wasn't thick enough for a fair. The Great Frost was in 1683/84. Also, there was no constabulary yet in the 1600s. 🤷 I think I'd have some trouble suspending disbelief. 😅 5y
rockpools @Leniverse 😂😂😂 Oh dear! It‘s possible a little artistic licence was used. I know they had frost fairs before/after the Great Frost, but no idea when! And I wonder if constable had a different meaning? I just want to believe he‘s done oodles of research- he‘s yet another author I‘ve seen around but haven‘t actually read! 5y

tournevis @RachelO I looked it up. 5y
Leniverse @tournevis Yes, but the Doctor Who episode is set during the 1814 frost fair. 5y
tournevis @Leniverse True! Still, similar plots and all that. 5y
