2013 marks the 20th anniversary of Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt! As a seamstress in the Big House, Clara dreams of a reunion with her Momma, who lives on another plantation--and even of running away to freedom. Then she overhears two slaves talking about the Underground Railroad. In a flash of inspiration, Clara sees how she can use the cloth in her scrap bag to make a map of the land--a freedom quilt--that no master will ever suspect. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt was written by Deborah Hopkinson. I absolutely love this story. This story is about Clara, who is a slave. She uses her skills to construct a quilt to create a map that her master does not recognize. This quilt gets her and others to freedom.

Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt is an HF story that would be great for a RA. The book shares how Clara, a slave and seamstress, sews a quilt that secretly shares the route of the Underground Railroad. It would be great for a RA that is paired when teaching about slavery and during Black History Month. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/kriscia-cabral/2017/Sweet-Clara-a... #ucflae3414f19

cassandram This sources shares a lesson on how to incorporate it for these purposes. For UDL I would use 3.1 by supplying background knowledge of the Underground Railroad. Then for ESOL strategy I would use 6 to monitor their comprehension. Overall really loved this book!! #ucflae3414f19 5y
DrSpalding This is the kind of book that can support social studies units! Learning about Harriet Tubman through a picture book lays the foundation of knowledge for the students. Excellent choice. 4y

Day 25: Thread
“Clara, a slave and seamstress on Home Plantation, dreams of freedom—not just for herself, but for her family and friends. When she overhears a conversation about the Underground Railroad, she has a flash of inspiration. Using scraps of cloth from her work in the Big House and scraps of information gathered from other slaves, she fashions a map that the master would never even recognize. . . .”
