Thanks to a super busy (but overall enjoyable) school year, my reading and Litsy-ing has really suffered.... 😬 But summer has begun and I‘m ready to read all the books and reconnect with all the wonderful Littens 🥰
Lately I‘ve been having a hankering for some nonfiction in my life, so I‘m kicking off my summer binge with the tagged book 🔥📚

JoScho Yay for summer break!!!! You look adorable 🖤 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @JoScho Thank you 🥰 Are you officially on summer break as well? 6y
JoScho Ugh no! We have a half day with kids tomorrow and then Wednesday is a workday. 6y

TheLudicReader I am not done until June 25...but classes finish on Friday and I am SO looking forward to the break. 6y
JoScho Thanks! I am moving so cleaning and packing is way worse than normal. Plus I have at least ten boxes of books. I am getting there slowly but surely! 6y

Well, that‘s depressing.

Samplergal Yeah. No kidding. I have 1800 TBR books, and I‘m 63. 😳 6y
mcipher How about just read books and enjoy them? There is no “best”!! 😉 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Samplergal Each year I become more selective. I want to spend my reading time on books that I want to read, which leads me to the point made by @mcipher - I think the idea of best books is subjective and if you‘re enjoying them, aren‘t they best? 6y

SaturnDoo 🤔I'm with @mcipher and @jpmcwisemorgan how do you know they are the best until you read them 😆 6y
monalyisha lol see? This is why I prefer Emerson. 😂 6y
Weaponxgirl @jpmcwisemorgan I‘m with you, I‘m generally more selective and will do a little research to try to avoid any duds for me books. But my idea of best books will be vastly different to someone else‘s, plus I‘m a total mood reader. 6y
hermyknee Heyyy! Just checking in on you - haven‘t heard from you in a while! 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @hermyknee hey girl! Thanks for the check in- I lurk on here once in a blue moon but the second half of this school year has me busy and beat!! Thank god there is only 3 more days left!!! How are you doing? Almost done with school?? 6y
hermyknee @TheFunkyBookworm I‘m okay. Kids have exams tomorrow and Thursday and then we have a teacher work day on Friday. I‘m so ready for this year to be over. It has 100% been the most difficult year of my career!!! 6y

Buechersuechtling I loved „Eleanor Oliphant …“ but I am quite ambiguous about the “Rosie”-books. They are “funny” at his costs. 😩 As far as I remember he changes his life life for her – but you usually cannot put a disability on and off like a coat. Or just change essentials of a disability because you decide you no longer want them. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 6y

Stayed up late finishing this up last night! I really enjoyed this #botm psychological thriller that had some ties to Greek mythology (see background pic). Knocked off one star bc I prefer my thrillers to be a little more twisty turny, instead of saving it all up for a big reveal at the end. I will say this one was pretty unpredictable!

TheFunkyBookworm @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks i think this one was also on ur list! Def recommend! 6y

Oh man I‘m really having a hard time with reviewing this one- after I finished, I did a google deep dive and came up with some concerning info:
-On the one hand I‘m willing to accept that this story is the rememberings of an 87 year old man and I‘m okay with this being his truth and POV- not necessarily overly fact checked
-On the other hand, the author couldn‘t even get Lali‘s name right?! Gita‘s tattooed number was incorrect?!
See more below ⬇️

TheFunkyBookworm Incorrect details like that make me feel like the author exploited Lali and his family for their story bc she knew it would be a hit and didn‘t really *care* about the people involved. Also, the writing was pretty basic. Still giving this a pick bc the story itself is incredible... (edited) 6y
TheFunkyBookworm Another similar book based on a true story but better is 6y
julesG GAH! I read that they had done extensive research, had professional researchers fact check in Europe to make sure this was a true story. Argh! 6y
See All 15 Comments
TheFunkyBookworm @julesG read the article linked... there are many saying the same/similar! (edited) 6y
BookNAround I thought it was pretty obvious that it was written as a screenplay first because there was a weird lack of emotional depth (which actors can add in with their performances). 6y
julesG Thanks! I had not seen this yet. Now I'm really glad I haven't read this yet. I hate inaccuracies that a little research could have avoided. 6y
blank Boo.. that's disappointing 😕 6y
BibliOphelia Man, I hate lazy research and writing and the lack of oversight in a cynical publishing environment that is pushing for sales over substance. On the heels of yesterday‘s Dan Malloy brouhaha, I am feeling more disillusioned than ever. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly @BibliOphelia I was thinking of Dan Mallory too—both books seem to have been written as cynical grabs at money, fame, and movie deals… 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @BookNAround agreed! Sometimes I don‘t mind a little emotional distance bc some topics are so difficult to read about anyway but this really had very little emotion attached to it- very strange 6y
BibliOphelia @Clare-Dragonfly 👍👍 6y
GingerAntics That‘s frustrating. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheFunkyBookworm this was not one of my favorites and I felt the writing was really basic also. I can‘t believe she got all of the important facts wrong!! 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I wish I had read the article you posted before I bought it!! I knew something didn‘t feel right about it compared to other similar books. I have Beneath a Scarlet Sky so I look forward to it!! 6y

First sentence: “My husband did not mean to kill Annie Doyle, but the lying tramp deserved it.”

Decided to pick my new read for today‘s #wildcard prompt and I‘m pretty excited about that killer first line!.....

Okay, I can‘t not acknowledge that pun 😂😏

So I picked this book for bookclub one month because I was really interested in the sections about H.H. Holmes.... turns out most of it was tediously long, #unwanted descriptions of the architecture that went into building the World‘s Fair... interesting at first but quickly became boringggggg lol give me more serial killer stuff please! 😂

#anewchapter
@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @vkois88

knotmagick I felt the same way. Dead Wake was a lot better. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I have this one, but haven‘t gotten to it!!! 6y

RamsFan1963 I was the exact opposite, I found the creation of the World's Faire endlessly fascinating, while the sordid serial killer story wasn't at all interesting. 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @RamsFan1963 once they got to the part where they finally opened the fair, I enjoyed it a LOT more... def did a deep dive on google looking up pics! 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @knotmagick I think it‘s very impressive how well researched his books are and he is clearly passionate about his subjects but I‘m not sure I have that passion within me to stick through allllll those details 😂 6y
Linear I have this book somewhere. But I never read it, it didnt seem my cup of tea. Maybe I should try it. But I dont handle overly done details... hmm 6y
vkois88 I am SO angry I read this book. I wanted more than I got about Holmes. I feel like it was advertised differently than it should have been... if I had known going into it what it was, it would have been fine 6y
cherinium I find it interesting that I have seen reviews going both ways. It seems that those interested in the architecture hate the serial killer chapters and the true crime nuts are bored to tears by the World Fair sections. I was one of the latter. Perhaps these 2 topics are a bit too disparate to work in one book. 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @Linear well- unless you are uber interested in architecture, I‘d say “overly done” is a good description lol 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @vkois88 yesss I agree!!!! Now I‘ve heard they are making a move (with Leo D. as Holmes!)- and I‘m better that will focus more on what we were looking for! Lol 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @cherinium interesting perspective- you might be right about that.... but then again i would have appreciated more of the architecture description in reference to HH Holmes‘s hotel- although maybe the true problem was that there just isn‘t a lot of information available! 6y
vkois88 Yes!!! 6y

TheFunkyBookworm @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @catherine2 If this wasn‘t written by JK Rowling no one would know about it lol It was so so so so soooooo TEDIOUS!! 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @Nessavamusic i was really tempted to put it down many a time, BUT it was for my bookclub so I soldiered through 🥴 6y
catherine2 It would have been decent with good editing. Just waaaay too long. 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @catherine2 agreed.... by about 300 pages 😂 6y
Spencer_Labbe Better than the second book though! Lol 6y

SailorMoon OMG I had no idea Dexter was based on a book!!! I am obsessed with that tv show!!! 6y
Buechersuechtling Can‘t wait to read your opinion. Wanted to read it before we saw the TV show but found it nowhere. It‘s also a book series, isn‘t it❓ 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @SailorMoon @Buechersuechtling yes, actually it‘s a series of books! I started watching the show when it first came out on Netflix and you had to send dvds back and forth lol we never made it past season 1 but I really need to restart and watch the entire thing!! 6y
Buechersuechtling @TheFunkyBookworm Yes, I strongly recommend that. It‘s really worth it. 😃 6y
Abby2 The books are really really good. I loved the series. If you enjoy dark humor this is the best. 6y

Pretending like I‘m going to read while my hubby tapes his hockey stick in preparation for his first game tonight... at 10:45pm?!?! Here‘s to hoping I don‘t have to meet him in the ER later... 😖 🏒

Anyway- this book... ughhhh it‘s sooooo slowwwww.... nothing happenssssss 😫 I would abandon ship but it‘s for bookclub and I bailed on last month‘s book (to be fair, so did most everyone else lol). Blahhhhhh

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I've listened to all in audio. The narrator is fantastic!! They are too long sometimes but I've fallen in love with Strike. 😍 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @Penny_LiteraryHoarders sigh... I don‘t think I‘ll be reading any others in the series after this one lol I wish I had the attention span for audiobooks- maybe that would help this one along a bit! 6y
Amiable I felt the same way about this book. 6y

TheBookStacker I didn‘t like this book but did love the rest of the books in the series 6y
Soubhiville Yeah I bailed on this. Good luck! 6y
cariashley The first one is slow but the series gets better and better. I switched to audio after book one and liked it so much more! 6y
Patchshank I just finished that book not too long ago. I wasn't impressed. I haven't read the rest of the series. 6y

These are the reflections of Anne‘s childhood friend who grew up next door to the Frank family. After the family went into hiding, she met up with her again later on in the concentration camp.
I‘m def adding this one to my TBR!
