Blues for Mister Charlie
Blues for Mister Charlie: A Play | James Baldwin
5 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
In a small Southern town, a white man murders a black man, then throws his body in the weeds. With this act of violence--which is loosely based on the notorious 1955 killing of Emmett Till--James Baldwin launches an unsparing and at times agonizing probe of the wounds of race. For where once a white storekeeper could have shot a "boy" like Richard Henry with impunity, times have changed. And centuries of brutality and fear, patronage and contempt, are about to erupt in a moment of truth as devastating as a shotgun blast. In his award-winning play, Baldwin turns a murder and its aftermath into an inquest in which even the most well-intentioned whites are implicated--and in which even a killer receives his share of compassion.

All the world‘s a stage… 🎭

1. Yes! Plays are great!
2. I usually prefer watching them, but something like Shakespeare I‘m able to follow better if I‘ve read it first.
3. I had no idea James Baldwin wrote plays, so I‘ve added this one!

#SundayFunday Have a great day and don‘t forget to tag me!

Yuki_Onna Soo cool you're doing a #SundayFunday about plays!👏
I thought they were more or less forgotten by readers nowadays (apart from required reading at school...)

Baldwin exposes 1960s racial division and the dark side of “justice” in the form of a play written for the stage. It is distantly related to the 1955 murder of Emmett Till for allegedly flirting with a white woman.
