Home After Dark | David Small

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed memoir Stitches comes a stunning story of one boy's heartbreaking coming of age in 1950s America. David Small's long-awaited graphic novel evokes Lord of the Flies in its savage portrayal of male adolescence gone awry. Kaleidoscopic and cinematic, Home After Dark is both a visual and narrative tour de force that renders the brutality of adolescence in the so-called nostalgic 1950s like no other recent work. After his mother abandons the family, thirteen-year-old Russell Pruitt follows his alcoholic father to sun-splashed California in search of the American Dream. Left on his own, with no parental guidance, Russell struggles to find his place in small town Marshfield, where he is bullied and gradually falls into a tentative friendship with another boy. Eventually, a series of unexpected events force Russell to confront his own frailties and cruelties, especially after his refusal to act results in tragedy. A gritty, unsentimental, and unforgettable immersion in the life of a boy trying to forge his own path to manhood, Home After Dark confirms David Small as one of the most gifted visual storytellers at work today.

Set in the 1950s California, this graphic novel touches on the main themes of homophobia, violent bullying, bigotry, abandonment, & isolation. The story is very bleak. The protagonist is going through adolescence phase, & trying to make sense of the world around him, but there‘re times I was frustrated with him for being a coward. The simple black & white artwork is effective in conveying the story..disturbing. TW: animal cruelty, nudity, suicide.

jlhammar Great review! Love David Small. Have you tried his graphic memoir yet? Really good. 5mo
erzascarletbookgasm @jlhammar No I haven‘t, this is my first book by him. Thanks for the recommendation! 5mo

This book was so dark. It was painful to read at times- in a good way. The illustrations and text really brought the story to life and provided the emotions of the book.

Deeply human, Home After Dark is a depressing but moving exploration of boyhood moving into manhood, and the crushing need to find one‘s place.

Always ALWAYS check under the dust jacket for what treasures may lie on the naked cover. I didn‘t love this as much as I wanted to. Slightly strange, mostly sad, a glimmer of hope doing its best to shine through.

Cartoonist David Small uses spare scenes loosely sketched in pen and grey ink wash to tell a quiet, devastating coming-of-age set in 1950s California. 13-year-old Russell deals with abandonment, isolation and cruelty. At one point, I mistakenly thought this was called Home Before Dark; that‘s when I realized the significance of the title for this powerful story about a boy who is looking for safety and meaningful connections.

“Goddamnit, Russell, I can warm up my own supper. The last thing I need is my son becoming a hausfrau.”

(One of many examples of toxic masculinity and the dysfunctional father-son relationship in this novel.)

It doesn‘t bode well when a father doesn‘t know how old his son is.

This is probably a case of it‘s-not-you-book,-it‘s-me. I read this #graphicnovel right after Hey Kiddo (in the background) and the two follow similar storylines of teen boys coming-of-age in difficult family situations. Small‘s story has a lot of violence and darkness on the page and that never really lets up. Spoiler in the comments.

emtobiasz The main character, Russell, is certainly in a difficult situation, but he also just lets a lot of things happen to him. Realistic, maybe, but frustrating to read. I guess I‘m just less interested in our present age in books where anyone, but particularly straight white men, stand by and let hate go unquestioned. 5y

Small does an excellent job weaving the text and the images together in this coming of age graphic novel.

The emotions in these illustrations are so powerful. Russell deals with loss, loneliness, and the difficulties of self-discovery in this coming-of-age graphic novel.

jillrhudy Incredible, is it not? So glad you liked it! I‘ve never seen more starkly evocative sofas, yard ornaments, etc. He is SUCH an artist. 6y

Nine years is WAY too long to wait for another graphic novel from David Small. Also another Mary Russell/Sherlock novel by Laurie R. King and a flu pandemic novel. I‘m a sucker for a good plague. Being a librarian is like having a 10000 TBR within 500 feet. #librariansoflitsy #graphicnovel

Amiable Ooh, I too am a sucker for a good pandemic book--especially if it's nonfiction! Thanks for the tip! 6y
jillrhudy @Amiable it looks excellent at first glance. A nice size, too. 6y
Amiable Have you read "The Great Influenza"? That's my favorite pandemic book. Big, too. A bit dense because it also delves into the founding of Johns Hopkins University and the medical school, but I couldn't put it down. 6y
