Hunting in Harlem
Hunting in Harlem | Mat Johnson
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Horizon Realty is bringing Harlem back to its Renaissance. With the help of Cedric, Bobby, and Horus-three ex-cons trying to forge a new life-Horizon clears out the rubble and the rabble, filling once-dilapidated brownstones with black professionals handpicked for their shared vision of Harlem as a shining icon for the race. And fate seems to be working in Horizon's favor: Harlem's undesirable tenants seem increasingly clumsy of late, meeting early deaths by accident. As an ambitious reporter, Piper Goines, begins to investigate the neighborhood's extraordinarily high accident rate, Horizon's three employees find themselves fighting for their souls and their very lives-against a backdrop of some of the most beautiful brownstones in all of Manhattan.

Hunting in Harlem | Mat Johnson
Pickpick

Overall, I enjoyed this maniacal, murderous ride. The writing was much more simplistic than Pym but think it reflected the mindset of the characters circumstances. One of the central characters doing a 180 to the moral deficiencies really made me sad.

1. Having my schedule switched to 3-midnight to fix an inventory issue at work when I‘m on the tail end of a week stretch. 😩
2. Think about my next closest day off. And hug Mika. 😻
3. My birthday is coming up July 8.
4. Tagged book. Haven‘t had a lot of time to finish with the way my schedule has been.

Hunting in Harlem | Mat Johnson

Started this a few days ago and found myself breezing through pretty steadily. I read Johnson‘s Pym in college and wanted to see what Hunting in Harlem was all about. I‘ve enjoyed it so far, outside of a pretty obvious plot point being “revealed”.
