Shiva: The Destroyer (Penguin Petit) | Devdutt Pattanaik
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
Shiva was an ascetic and a husband, a yogi and a householder. He is named Veenapani, for playing the veena, Natraja for the elegance of his dance, but is a storyteller and a scholar. He was quick to rage in Bhairava, but has the tenderness of Ardhaneshwar, who loves his wife so much he offers her half his body so that they may always be together. He has a third eyebut is it from when he destroyed desire in Kama, or because he wanted to more fully view Parvatis loveliness? Can we ever truly know the depths of what Shiva embodies? Discover the paradoxes of Shiva woven into a short, sweet read from Devlok.

This book is a kind of a review document to various mentions of Shiva beginning from the Indus Valley Civilization to Upnishads. It describes a few stories about him from such texts and also mentions some oral lores. Its a very short read but answers a few popular questions about Shiva and his temples. Overall it is good compilation of various religious texts but many beautiful stories of Shiva are missed.

nalinisriv Hey thanks for the welcome post. Its really helpful. For days I was wondering how Litsy works. I searched but could not find anything worth. I deleted my fb account long time back, so I don't know if my friends are here on Litsy or not but I liked this platform. Thus, I started posting reviews of the books I am reading and Voila I found your post on how to use Litsy. 😊 6y
