Letters and Papers from Prison
Letters and Papers from Prison | Dietrich Bonhoeffer
9 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
Despite Dietrich Bonhoeffers earlier theological achievements and writings, it was his correspondence and notes from prison that electrified the postwar world six years after his death in 1945. The materials gathered and selected by his friend Eberhard Bethge in Letters and Papers from Prison not only brought Bonhoeffer to a wide and appreciative readership, especially in North America, they also introduced to a broad readership his novel and exciting ideas of religionless Christianity, his open and honest theological appraisal of Christian doctrines, and his sturdy, if sorely tried, faith in face of uncertainty and doubt. This splendid volume, in many ways the capstone of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, is the first unabridged collection of Bonhoeffers 19431945 prison letters and theological writings. Here are over 200 documents that include extensive correspondence with his family and Eberhard Bethge (much of it in English for the first time), as well as his theological notes, and his prison poems. The volume offers an illuminating introduction by editor John de Gruchy and an historical Afterword by the editors of the original German volume: Christian Gremmels, Eberhard Bethge, and Renate Bethge.

Heartbreaking. Most of the book is the ordinary communications of an imprisoned man with his family as they all cope with the bombings, rationing, and uncertainty of daily life in Germany during WWII. In the second half, he begins writing on theology and poetry to his friend Eberhard. Only the editor‘s introduction puts the letters in context: Dietrich was involved in a plot against Hitler and executed just before the end of the war.

“It‘s true that not everything that happens is simply ‘God‘s will.‘ But in the end nothing happens ‘apart from God‘s will‘ (Matt. 10:29), that is, in every event, even the most ungodly, there is a way through to God.” —Dietrich Bonhoeffer #currentlyreading

Returning to this for #AshWednesday and the beginning of #Lent. Is anyone else reading something for spiritual reflection? #currentlyreading

“Inactive waiting and dully looking on are not Christian responses. Christians are called to action and sympathy not through their own firsthand experiences but by the immediate experience of their brothers, for whose sake Christ suffered.” #thoughtsandprayers

“If we want to know how to get the better of stupidity, we must seek to understand its nature. This much is certain, that it is in essence not an intellectual defect but a human one. There are human beings who are of remarkably agile intellect yet stupid, and others who are intellectually quite dull yet anything but stupid...

We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.
