Uses rabbits, a species introduced to Australia, to represent an allegory of the arrival of Europeans in Australia and the widespread environmental destruction caused by man throughout the continent. A sophisticated picture book.

Stunningly beautiful artwork and a realistic “scary“ story about rabbits taking over another species land. Absolutely loved it from beginning to end.

#WanderingJune Day 26: The straightforward, deceptively-simple allegorical retelling of #DownUnder Australia‘s history is matched perfectly by Shaun Tan‘s amazingly-stunning artwork that complements the narrative with dark black spaces, monochrome illustrations of how the rabbits have overtaken the entire country, the sepia-toned undercurrents of loss and tragedy. 4⭐️ The illustrations in this book immediately pull the reader to it. The story is one of colonization. It is very reminiscent of the colonists taking over America. And it works. And just like real life, no happy ending.

JazzFeathers This looks and sounds so interesting. 6y
LibrarianRyan @JazzFeathers it was. It was just one of those weird titles that catches you eye in a pile of donations. 6y
