Sorrow of War: A Novel of North Vietnam
Sorrow of War: A Novel of North Vietnam | Bao Ninh
8 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
The Sorrow of War - by turns bleak and poetic, pellucid and cunning - opens with Kien, an infantry cadre from Hanoi, engaged in the grim business of retrieving and burying the dead at the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the war. From here, the novel ranges back to Kien's youth and the pains of adolescent love, and moves forward to his attempts, as a struggling writer in postwar Hanoi, to come to grips with the savageries he has witnessed, to make sense of death, love, and loss - and of his own survival.

We follow Kein whose job in the Vietnam war was to search for dead bodies in the jungle. In the years after the war ended, he would drink to excess and write down the things that kept him up at night. This is his story. It's jumbled and mostly out of chronological order which can be confusing however the last few pages address the issues.

This book is full of horrors. Pages full of broken dreams and broken spirits. Lost lives, lost souls.

What an amazing, heart-wrenching novel. The images and emotions that come out of the page are haunting yet beautiful.

Finally finished this masterpiece. What a stunning novel!! I feel for both Kien and Phuong. What a hard life they had!!

Started. On page 48. The tone is generally sad. I feel for the narrator, Kien. The tragedy of war. The hopelessness of youth caught in the vortex of war. Horrible nightmares and stifled tears.

@Butterfinger has done a great job of posting reading suggestions for Vietnam.

I want to post a few more that my library carries, and yes, several of these are about the war in Vietnam.

Spring essence: the poetry of Hô Xuân Huong
The book of salt by Monique Truong (historical fiction)
Night sky with exit wounds by Ocean Vuong (poetry)
The sorrow of war by Bao Minh (novel written by North Vietnamese soldier)

#foodandlit, #Vietnam

Butterfinger As much as I want to learn about today's Vietnam, I also want a deeper understanding of the conflict. Thanks for these suggestions. I'm going to see if I can find Spring Essence. 4y
Liz_M The Book of Salt is about Vietnam? I was about to use it for a “set in Paris“ prompt. 4y
bnp Not really. It's a novel where the MC is s Vietnamese cook woring for Alice B. Toklas & Gertrude Stein while living in Paris.. His childhood was spent in post-colonial Vietnam. @Liz_M 4y

bnp @Butterfinger Spring Essence is poetry by a writer born in the late 18th century, FYI. 4y
bnp I meant working, not woring. 4y
arubabookwoman I read The Sorrow of War about 10 years ago and still remember it. It‘s the Vietnam war from the POV of a North Vietnamese soldier. Highly recommended! @Butterfinger (edited) 4y
