The Shipwreck Hunter: A Lifetime of Extraordinary Discoveries on the Ocean Floor
The Shipwreck Hunter: A Lifetime of Extraordinary Discoveries on the Ocean Floor | David L. Mearns
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
This gripping memoir by the worlds foremost marine geologist is an enthralling blend of maritime history, popular science, and Clive Cusslerstyle adventure. David L. Mearns has discovered some of the worlds most fascinating and elusive shipwrecks. From the mighty battleship HMS Hood (sunk in a pyrrhic duel with the Bismarck) to solving the mystery of HMAS Sydney, to the crumbling wooden skeletons of Vasco da Gamas sixteenth century fleet, Mearns has searched for and found dozens of sunken vessels in every ocean of the world. The Shipwreck Hunter chronicles his most intriguing finds. It describes the extraordinary techniques used, the detailed research and mid-ocean stamina (and courage) required to find a wreck thousands of feet beneath the sea, as well as the moving human stories that lie behind each of these oceanic tragedies. Combining the adventuring derringdo of Indiana Jones with the precision of a scientist, The Shipwreck Hunter opens an illuminating porthole into the shadowy depths of the ocean.

Due to my interest in everything sea related, I was looking forward to reading this book. What a fascinating topic! And it is! What Mearns did and does is simply astonishing. adly, his book isn't. Not because of the stories he shares with us - those are the very heart of this book. But because it's written in a rather boring way. Not everyone is ment to be a writer, Mearns talents lie elsewhere, not in writing...

RosePressedPages I‘ve been debating reading this one because I‘m a shipwreck nerd, but maybe I‘ll skip this one… 3y

This book was honestly one of the most entertaining memoirs I‘ve read. Every chance I got outside of study and work I would be enthralled with tales of finding long lost wrecks on the bottom of the deepest oceans. It was a fascinating read. David Mearns has lead a truely spectacular life.
