Pickpick

Final book completed for September's #20in4 - this is a short, fluffy, modern adaptation of P&P that I had a few quibbles with but overall enjoyed. I especially liked that the author decided to keep all the sisters (a lot of modern adaptations seem to think it's ridiculous that a family would have five kids) and that Darcy was a reasonable person, not just a total jerk. I would have liked this one to be a little longer, as it felt like some ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) things were wrapped up a little too quickly, but overall a perfectly pleasant time.

I didn't hit my goal of 1000pgs for #20in4 but I did complete 3 three books and caught up on all my chapter-a-day reads, including Dracula (I was over 100pgs behind on that one), so I feel pretty satisfied with the weekend's progress @Andrew65

I've owned this book since 1997 and am sure that I have read it at some point, but couldn't remember anything about it. I'm using Scarathlon as a chance to get some old mysteries off my shelves and this one was the first up! It's a perfectly fun MG story, but the whole thing hinges on one of the (adult) characters not “confessing“ about something that happened... and in the end his reasoning just didn't make sense to me haha

TheAromaofBooks So not a bad little one-off, but also not one I feel like needs to continuing taking up valuable shelf-space.

Do you ever read a book that you actually enjoy, but then want to spend time whining about? 😂 This is one of those books for me. It's definitely a pick and I will definitely be reading the next book, but at the same time it had several things that irritated me. The biggest one was the lack of relevant dragon-related information. The little “excerpt“ from a book in the back was not enough to help me sort through literally at least 20 kinds of ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) dragons. Plus, there are terms for all the different crew members that I just had to kind of guess what each person did - this book needed at least one appendix listing the breeds of dragons in a way that I could actually reference instead of the rambly few paragraphs I got of muddled information lol

But on the whole, I really enjoyed the concept and I love Temeraire (Laurence... eh, he's okay, but seemed to spend a lot of time getting ⬇
2d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) offended about stuff that wasn't very well explained. He was very sensitive to ~how~ people said things to him). I'll be continuing this series (one of these days) and am interested to see where Novik takes the world-building.

This book has been on my shelf since January 2021, when @avanders gifted it to me in a swap box - so thank you!! I have finally gotten around to reading it less than 2 years later, which is pretty good for me! 😂

TheSpineView I loved this book. I need to read the rest of the series. 2d
Andrew65 Great 👏👏👏 One i keep meaning to read. 2d
PuddleJumper I never read the rest of this series. I enjoyed this book but never enough to find the second one. Might give it another go 2d
BookwormAHN I love this series. I agree about the appendix and Laurence does relax some later on in the series. 2d
TheAromaofBooks @BookwormAHN - I could tell even in this book that that relaxation is part of his character arc. However, the development is rather uneven. I could be wrong, but I think this was Novik's first book, and it does have that vibe about it. I'm really looking forward to continuing the series, though. 2d

Is the #WeeklyForecast looking unrealistically optimistic? Of course it is! I love having the windowsill stuffed! 😂 October books are IN and that tiny bit of extra space I had is now but a memory. The post-it notes that you can't really read are my Kindle books on the left, and then three sheets that are my #Scarathlon #BookSpinBingo books that I'll be mixing in with my other stuff, but since I do actually want to be able to kind of see out this⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) window, I decided not to physically pull them out just yet!

My current plan is to read as many of these in October as I can, then in November I am going to focus completely on progressing/finishing series. I seem to be in the middle of about ten of them, which drives me crazy. If anyone is interested in a low-key November series-reading challenge, let me know!

For now, off to finish the tagged book!!

First off, did someone make up the tagged book just for this challenge?? I just saw people using it this week! I love it! Anyway, here is this month's bingo board. Not gonna lie, I got unreasonably excited about the free space mountain 😂 (Although it was partially created by the fact that I got to the end and was short a number because 24 had gone into hiding on the floor!)

In case you missed it, I'm not going to tag everyone here, but anyone ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) is more than welcome to join in this challenge. I'll post my usual rambling about “the rules“ below, but just let me know if you have any questions. Remember, if you're also participating in #Scarathlon, bingos are worth 20pts and a bonus 100pts for clearing the board. Can't wait to see everyone's fresh new boards for October!!! ⬇ 4d
TheAromaofBooks Here's the #BookSpinBingo card! First, I put our official numbers (9 & 10) back in the mix. Then I drew them all out & wrote them down as I went, meaning the official numbers are just mixed into the card with the rest! As you can see, 21-25 are both labeled with their numbers & also as free spaces, so you can use them to match however you wrote your list. To score a bingo, just read books (in any order) that are in any row or column!! MORE INFO ⬇ 4d
TheAromaofBooks 1 - Remember – NO PRESSURE!!!! If this starts to stress you out, just take that page right out of your journal and pretend it never existed!! This challenge is to encourage you to read, not to make you feel like reading is a chore!!!

2 - FREE SPACES can be filled with any book that is NOT already on your list!! However, you MUST READ A BOOK to check off those free spaces!! ⬇

TheAromaofBooks 3 & final - As a reminder, only the “official” BookSpin/DoubleSpin numbers will count towards giveaway entries. I don‘t want the giveaway to be stacked against people who aren‘t able to read lots of books each month. So basically there is still a maximum of 2 entries possible per month no matter how many books you read from your list. This bingo card is just for fun & glory! 😁

Thanks for playing & happy reading!!!

Soubhiville Free Space Mountain! 🤣 I hadn‘t noticed yet that there is a BookSpinBingo book now, it seems like someone must have created that just for you! Thanks for your organization as always Sarah, I always look forward to the monthly picks! 4d

Yay!! The moment you have all been waiting for! 😂 October's #BookSpin is NINE and the #DoubleSpin is TEN!!

Here is what I am going to do: I am going to go post the #BookSpinBingo board. Then I am going to come back here and tag everyone (which takes a hot minute haha) Then I am NOT going to tag anyone on the Bingo post. This saves me tagging time and keeps everyone from getting double-tagged. You all are smart! You can find the Bingo board!!😆 ⬇

TheAromaofBooks Below are a few housekeeping items that I would really appreciate if you took a few moments to read. As always, my new masterpost about both #BookSpin & #BookSpinBingo can be found on my blog - https://thearomaofbooks.wordpress.com/bookspin-bookspinbingo-litsy-challenge - & this link is always available in my profile as well. ⬇ 4d
TheAromaofBooks 1. Remember, this is a no-pressure challenge!! You can read one or both of these books. You can bail on them. You can bail on the whole challenge and try again next month. Whatever works!! This is supposed to be fun not stressful!! ⬇ 4d
TheAromaofBooks 2. I do have a giveaway at the end of the year. Every BookSpin or DoubleSpin book completed counts as an entry!! In the past, I have tracked these myself, but for 2022 YOU are in charge of tracking your own entries!! To help with this process, I have created a Google Form that can be found here - https://forms.gle/X57ePKzuHpsqLjE5A - You can use this Form two different ways: You can update it throughout the year OR you can wait and fill in ⬇ 4d
See All 55 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) all the information at the end of the year. If you want to be entered in the giveaway you MUST use this form. However, if you do NOT want to be entered in the giveaway but still want to use the form for organizational purposes, I have set it up so that the personal info/address blank is OPTIONAL - so you can use the form without submitting your name/address. If you do not care about the giveaway you do NOT have to use this form at all ⬇ 4d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) There is more information about how the form works when you click on the link and go to the form because I LOVE overexplaining things!!! You are also ALWAYS welcome to ask me questions!!

4. Even though I don't HAVE to see your reviews I love reading them!! So please feel free to tag me in any and all BookSpin reivews!!

5. For the giveaway, DNFs do count!! The goal for #BookSpin is to get a book off your TBR, so if you decide not to ⬇
4d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) finish it, it's still off the TBR and still counts as a completion in my book!!

6. If you do not finish your #BookSpin/#DoubleSpin book this month it is STILL ELIGIBLE for a giveaway entry as long as you complete it sometime in 2022!! There is space in the form for you both to put down what book you are SUPPOSED to read & then to check off which books you DID read! ⬇
4d
TheAromaofBooks 7. Everyone is welcome to join this challenge!! If you wanted tagged & I missed you, it was completely inadvertent!! Please just let me know that you want to be added to the tag list. You can also let me know if you want to be removed - no hard feelings!! Feel free to jump in & out of this challenge as needed. Also, obviously, getting tagged doesn't mean you HAVE to actually participate!!

TheAromaofBooks 8 & final (FINALLY) - While I don't have time to reply to all of the comments to this post, I do read every one and love seeing which books got picked for you!! I do respond to any direct questions or confusion, so please feel free to ask away if something doesn't make sense or you need some clarifications. Thank you all so much for your enthusiasm, and happy reading!!! 4d

Soubhiville Thanks Sarah! I‘ll be reading Far From the Tree and Only Killers and Thieves. 📚❤️😊 (edited) 4d

claudiuo Thank you so much! My BookSpin is The Shadow of the Wind and DoubleSpin is God Bless You, Mr Rosewater which came up before and I still haven‘t read it yet. 4d
Megabooks Apparently I am not smart and can‘t find the bingo board…has it not been posted yet? I am on your page. Glad you‘re saving time because I REALLY appreciate that you take time to do this each month!!!! It is such a fun challenge!!! 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Could you tag me in the bingo board post? I have a few tags blocked for one of the fall challenges (and apparently it‘s insufficient because I am STILL seeing stuff about the things people are WATCHING for it… argh…) so it doesn‘t show up for me, even on your page, unless you tag me. @Megabooks Maybe that‘s your problem as well? 4d
Allylu Mine are The Thursday Murder Club by Osman and A Wedding in Haiti by Alvarez. 4d
Megabooks @Clare-Dragonfly thanks for tip! Once I unmuted scarathalon, I could see it. I‘ll just remute it now that I have the board. 4d
Kristin_Reads The bookiverse must really want me to read this because it was my pick last month too but I wasn‘t able to get to it. I‘m looking forward to it! 4d
TheAromaofBooks @Megabooks @Clare-Dragonfly - I didn't think about people having tags blocked for the October challenge (which I totally understand doing if you aren't actually interested in the event haha) I would never have puzzled out why you couldn't see the post, so I'm glad you figured it out!!! 4d
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly - I tagged you, so let me know if you still can't see it!! 4d

Well, here is my under-the-wire TBR for #Scarathlon/#BookSpinBingo On the left is my normal BookSpinBingo list, comprised of my “assignments“ for the month, with the rest of the spaces free for the backlog of assignments from past months that I haven't read yet (I don't have a problem 😂) On the right is my bonus Scarathlon list, comprised mostly of mysteries and thrillers from my own shelves that I haven't read yet. Extraordinary October | Diana Wagman

Oh my gosh, not only is there less than one week until October, there is less than one week until OCTOBER SECOND! Ack!

So yes, #BookSpin day is coming, so if you want to play for October, it's time to start thinking about your lists!! Several of you are more organized than I am and have already posted them, so sorry if you're getting tagged when you've already posted!!

As a reminder, you can totally combine this challenge with #Scarathlon - ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) ANY bingo boards completed, BookSpin and otherwise, count for 20pts per completed bingo and 100pts per cleared board. So if you're a big reader, feel free to create more than one BookSpinBingo board.

If you're tagged on this post, you'll be tagged on Sunday when I draw October's numbers. HOWEVER (BIG CHANGE!!!!) I am NOT going to tag everyone again on the Bingo post!! I literally post BookSpin, spend 10mins tagging everyone, then post ⬇
1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Bingo and spend 10mins tagging the same exact list 😂 So I am ONLY going to tag everyone for the BookSpin post. Then just check my profile 10mins later if you want to see the Bingo board!!! We will see how this works out. If everyone hates it, I'll go back to my reliable double-tag system haha

Below are the basics for this challenge, including a link to more involved instructions. As always, let me know if you have questions!!

1w
TheAromaofBooks 1/5 - The rules for this challenge can be found by reading my masterpost on my blog (off Litsy) - https://thearomaofbooks.wordpress.com/bookspin-bookspinbingo-litsy-challenge - but the basics: if you want to play, make a list of 20 books you've been meaning to read & tag me when you post it!!

2/5 - You do NOT have to participate in the Bingo part of the challenge if that isn't your thing!! You can just read the ⬇

See All 59 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) BookSpin or DoubleSpin or however many books works for you! Basically, choose a reading level that fits your life, and feel free to change it from month to month!!
3/5 - Just a reminder that the rules here are pretty loose!! If you have a huge/challenging book, feel free to let it take up more than one square. Some people struggle with super specific lists & prefer to go with categories (i.e. library book, Netgalley, mystery, from the ⬇
1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) living room shelf, etc.), which is also fine! You can make separate lists for BookSpin & DoubleSpin so that you read one book from each. This year, I have a list of challenging books that I am using to read the BookSpin number from each month, but then make a list of my month's TBR to use for the bingo part. Make this challenge work for you!! Just ask if you have questions about whether something is “allowed“ - most of the time the ⬇ 1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) answer is yes!!

4/5 - Remember, if you didn't finish your September BS/DS, you can still check it off at any point in 2022. If you wish to participate in the end-of-the-year giveaway, each completed (or DNF'd) BS/DS read counts as an entry!! This year, everyone is in charge of tracking their OWN ENTRIES for this giveaway!! This is being done via Google Form. You are also welcome to use this form even if you don't want to enter the ⬇
1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) giveaway, just don't put in your name/address. I won't be looking at these forms until the end of the year, so you can either add your entries throughout the year, or add them in one big batch in December, whatever works best for you!! The form can be found here - https://forms.gle/X57ePKzuHpsqLjE5A - please remember that once you start a form, you need to SAVE THE LINK that Google will email to you so that you can edit your form!! ⬇ 1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) 5/5 - Thank you all SO MUCH for your participation and enthusiasm!!! IamIamIam This year has absolutely FLOWN by!!! I've been struggling to get myself focused on this challenge but I think I'm picking heavier books and then not being interested in them at the time. CoverToCoverGirl Unbelievable it‘s next month again! 🫣 1w
Lcsmcat Wow - where has the year gone? 1w
TheAromaofBooks @IamIamIam - This year, I made one list of classics/harder-to-read books and every month I have been reading just the BookSpin number from that list, a chapter-a-day, and have actually made it through a few books I never thought I would read (like Gone With the Wind!). I make a second list of fun books/ones I'm planning to read anyway for my BookSpinBingo list. So yes, find the way that makes this challenge work for you!!! 1w
IamIamIam @TheAromaofBooks That's an excellent idea!!! I think I overestimated the amount of time I'd have available too. #WeeklyForecast - one week until October's books get added and look - there is actually a TINY BIT OF SPARE SPACE on the Windowsill of Optimism!!! This past week has been absolute madness and this week shows no real signs of that letting up, so I am wedging in reading wherever I can, but there has definitely been a big drop-off on my social media/book review action! Only so much bandwidth in my brain 😂

@Cinfhen

janeycanuck I really love the nickname Windowsill of Optimism. I may have to “leverage“ it for myself. 1w
TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck - Thank you!! It's REALLY helped me this year to have my immediate TBR/challenge books all in one place, very visible. Of course I'm always hopelessly behind, which is where the optimism part comes in 😂 1w
julieclair I really need to set up my own equivalent of your Window of Optimism. Right now, I have little stacks of the current month‘s books all over the house, which leaves me feeling kind of scatterbrained. 🤪 6d
See All 6 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - This year I have put them all in one place, and then I also have each of these books in my jar and draw from it at random to see which of these comes next. So it's a mix of “assignments“ and randomness, with a splash of mood reading if I feel like it since I seem to always have several genres going on here at once 😂 I'm reading from this for October, then clearing the decks - November is going to be focused on completing series ⬇ 6d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) since I seem to be embroiled in WAY TOO MANY and then December will be fluffy Christmas/holiday romances for #WinterGames - I'll never actually finish my TBR, but it has been fun to feel like I'm making some progress on it!! 6d
julieclair I‘ll never actually finish my TBR either…. and I think I actually like it that way. I like the idea of a random draw for the books without fixed “read by” dates, such as my IRL book clubs. Thanks for the inspiration! 😀 6d

#BookReport a little late - I did actually check some books off this week, including the tagged, which isn't even pictured!! I also finished Venetia, which was enjoyable but not my favorite Heyer just because there were SO MANY ANNOYING PEOPLE in poor Venetia's life! Oh my gosh! Just leave her ALONE! 😂 I also finished Mystery in the Mews (fun but not life-changing) and this random little hardcover I've owned for years - it was a bit odd but not ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) bad. I bailed on Runaway even though I have enjoyed several of May's other books, this one just wasn't working for me. It was kind of depressing and I don't need that kind of negativity in my life right now!!!

@Cinfhen
1w
CindyMyLifeIsLit Venetia is one of my favorite Heyers because I‘ve read so few romances where they just immediately click. I think she communicates the depth of their connection, how absolutely perfect they are for each other, so well. I like the “I hate you until I love you” plots too, but I think Venetia‘s story is the most romantic of Heyer‘s regencies. 6d
TheAromaofBooks @CindyMyLifeIsLit - I absolutely loved Venetia herself, and totally loved her love story. It was the annoying neighbor who kept interfering in her life and acting so obnoxious that drove me absolutely crazy and honestly brought down my enjoyment of the entire story. He was SO smug and condescending! But I agree that the romance in this one is delightful. 6d
CindyMyLifeIsLit @thearomaofbooks I thought Oswald Denny was hilarious! Trying so hard to be mysterious and Byronic, only to have his cover blown by his mother trying to force him to eat dinner and offering him tonics while his sisters laugh at him! Then he morphs into a grumpy teenager. 5d

#WeeklyForecast - Well, it would be nice to actually check off some books 😂 but between work being crazy, Grandma being in the hospital (she had emergency surgery but is thankfully recovering very well, especially considering she's 91!!), and me having an unfortunate addiction to Stardew Valley, I'm not super optimistic! 😆 Should be finishing Venetia today. I think I'm going to read Murder in the Mews next, then The Scarlet Pimpernel (which I ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) forgot to add to the windowsill) for #LMPBC. After that it's anyone's guess!!! For now, I'm definitely not off to play Stardew Valley 😂

Not a lot to say for this week's #BookReport - I had an insanely busy week at work, plus my husband was off this week so we used the extra time to bring the neverending bathroom remodel up to around 95% done and it's AWESOME!! Like a real room instead of a construction zone!! But not a lot of reading time!! Finished the next Leaphorn & Chee mystery, which was really good. Read about half of The Chosen Twelve and it just wasn't jiving for me so I ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) bailed. Also read ahead & finished The Flatshare, which I just so thoroughly enjoyed. Currently halfway through Venetia for #LMPBC & it's pretty delightful. Work continues to be crazy mostly because we hire people who show up for maybe one day and then just no call no show so we are perpetually shorthanded and constantly trying to train new people - so frustrating! So I'm not particularly optimistic about upcoming reading time this week! 3w
Cinfhen Shelf looks like it‘s dwindling - and I‘m soooo excited about your bathroom renovation- can‘t wait to see the finished project 3w

Hey friends!!! Well, unbelievably October is rapidly approaching, and with it - #Scarathlon !!! This year, I've created a special edition #PromptMaze for the event. Many of the prompts can be filled by reading mystery/thriller/paranormal/etc although there are also some genre-neutral prompts as well. The link is below, and to participate you will want to go to File, then Make a Copy. Once you have your own copy, you can edit the maze so that you⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) can uncover the prompts!! The first tab on the spreadsheet has the instructions, but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I would also love to hear about your progress as you make your way through the maze, so feel free to tag me!!

For points, each completed prompt will be worth TWENTY points!!!

Here's the link - have fun!!! ⬇

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Chrissyreadit It took me a bit before I figured it out too. I haven‘t participated in this event or used this app before. I can try to help you out if you want. I didn‘t realize there were two sheets to toggle through at the bottom and kept clicking all over the “Instructions” one before I noticed the “Scarathlon Party” one. 😅 3w
Chrissyreadit @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm yes- I would love help. First should I go on my computer instead of phone? 3w
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Chrissyreadit It worked just fine on my iPhone, but I don‘t know if it‘s compatible with every phone. 3w
claudiuo Thank you so much for including me. I usually don't participate in readathons but I love the PromptMaze so I'm in. Thank you! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - It is saved in Google Sheets (their version of Excel/spreadsheet). I always find things easier to do on my computer, but it should theoretically also work on a phone. The document opens to the Instructions tab like @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm said, and at the bottom there is another tab that says Scarathlon Party. If you click on that you will see a sheet that is mostly blacked out. Each cell of the spreadsheet contains three ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) prompts. To uncover them, you first of all have to make your own copy so you can edit the spreadsheet, so click on File, then Make a Copy, and then save it. After that, you will be able to edit the copy you just made, which means you can click on any cell you want, then click the paint bucket and change the fill color of the cell. I have it set to black (the same color as the font) so that the prompts are surprises as you get to them!! ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) So first you click on cell A2, then the paint bucket and change the fill color so that you can see the words (literally any color other than black will allow the black font to show). Then you just follow the prompts - if you read a book with an amateur detective, you will move on to cell A3 and uncover that one. If you read a thriller, you'll go to cell C4, and a horror will take you to cell F1. Once you get there, you see if you can ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) read one of those prompts, and just keep going!! Hopefully this makes sense but please let me know if you have any questions, either on here or you can email me itsthegoodlife15 at gmail. Hope this helps!!! ❤ 3w

My #WeeklyForecast somehow contains more books than last week!! One of the books I completed last week was immediately replaced by the next book in the series, and then three books came in that are September “assignments“ - Venetia for #LMPBC, Murder in the Mews for #AgathaChristieClubR2, and Dangerous Beauty from the publisher for review. Currently reading the tagged book - I really enjoy the Leaphorn & Chee books but my progress through that ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) series has been quite slow, as evidenced by the fact that I have literally had this book checked out since NOVEMBER of 2021! 😂 WHOOPS. Anyway, apparently the library wants their book back so I actually am reading it. After that, I'll be back to letting fate decide which book from the Windowsill of Optimism is next!!

#BookReport this week - I did finish the next Chesapeake Shores book as well as the tagged book. My copy of The Flatshare arrived so I also caught up on that and am back on track for the #LittensLoveRomance buddy read!! I'm staying on top of my chapter-a-day-ish reads for The Stand In (also #LLR), Tom Sawyer (#BookSpin) and Jane Eyre (#PemberLittens) as well, but overall have not had much reading time this week!! Peaches are done and we are in ⬇

Pickpick

A soft pick - not my favorite Roberts book but still quite readable. The Past section kind of stressed me out just because I knew something bad would have to happen to break them up and I don't like waiting for the bad stuff haha But I actually did like Tate and Matthew together. I appreciate how Roberts can find random jobs/settings for her stories and still make them work. I loved the descriptions of life underwater and the whole concept of ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) treasure diving. I loved Tate's parents and Matthew's uncle and the sense of family and community they had. The story did feel slow in spots but still an enjoyable read.

Whew, this week has been crazy!! But here is my pile of #BookMail from Tuesday that I am just now posting... my #FallingForFallSwap package arrived safely @avanders - I think it's from @quietjenn ? So excited!! I splurged and got a bonus BOTM this month (I skipped last month, so it all balances out, right??) Dangerous Beauty is a book to review for Random House and @julieclair Venetia arrived safe & sound for #LMPBC !! I'm catching up on The ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Flatshare for #LittensLoveRomance - it's a reread for me but it's been several years. I remember really liking this one so I wanted to get my own copy BUT to be complicated I like the British cover better 😂 Plus whenever possible I prefer getting the edition from the country where it was originally published - a little pet peeve of mine is the fact that British/Australian/Canadian books get “Americanized“ when they're published here - ⬇ 4w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) actually I want to know what words/terms they use in other places for things?? For instance does anyone have the American version of The Flatshare? I can't remember - in chapter 10 what does Tiffy stress-bake? In this edition it's flapjacks, which I had to look up because obviously in Britain they are NOT pancakes and I'm wondering if that word got changed in the American version?? 4w
KristiAhlers For the most part English writers do get “Americanized” both with spelling and word usage. I managed to get the British edition so my heart is happy. I know that the Harry Potter books are different. We lived in the UK when the first books came out. None of us (hubby and two boys) liked the American versions as we were used to British way of speaking. So we bought all our copies through the post so they‘d be English versions. 4w
See All 9 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @KristiAhlers - I bought the anniversary Hufflepuff House editions for myself as they came out and was bonus happy because they are the British editions. It was really fun to read them and notice various (mostly minor but still) differences. I feel like Americanizing spelling and terms takes away from the culture and setting and I don't like it haha I know it goes the other way as well - American books that get UK'd 😂 4w
quietjenn Yep, it's from me! Sorry if it forgot to write that (or anything else) on the box! But so glad to know that it is there! 😁 4w
DanaManiac The cover is lovely! They actually kept flapjacks the same in the American version. 4w

#WeeklyForecast - I added September's books to the Windowsill of Optimism and actually it doesn't look to bad. This month's #Roll100 numbers were one book I've already read and two books that each start a new series, and I am DONE starting new series until I have finished series!! 😂 So I think I am going to just take a pass on that challenge this month and jump back in in October. I finished Moonlight Cove last night and started The Reef. Next ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I need to read the Tony Hillerman book - it's the next in the Leaphorn & Chee series and is due back at the library, probably because I've had it for like three months 😆 Other than that, whatever the fates decide should get pulled out of this window next!! Overall this system of working my way through my challenges/TBR is working really well. I think at the end of November, though, I'm going to clear the windowsill entirely, read ⬇ 1mo

Here's the #BookSpinBingo card! First, I put our official numbers (17 & 20) back in the mix.

Can you ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) believe this card?? I promise you all that I truly write them down as I draw them out, and I couldn't believe the way the free spaces lined up this month - three in a column, and two in the row with the BS number?!?! Absolutely ridiculous 😂

Good morning, everyone! The moment you have all been waiting for!! Our official #BookSpin number is SEVENTEEN!! Our official #DoubleSpin number is TWENTY!! I have thoroughly enjoyed looking at everyone's lists & am really looking forward to seeing your reviews!

My next post will be the #BookSpinBingo card!!

My tagging/tracking system has changed this year, so if you didn't get tagged PLEASE let me know so I can add you to the (semi) permanent⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont‘d) tag list! It takes me a while to post all the tags because I have to do it in multiple comments and then my computer gets very thoughtful 😂 I will post “FINISHED“ when I post the last batch of tags so you can tell if you have been missed!!! ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont‘d) Below are a few housekeeping items that I would really appreciate if you took a few moments to read. As always, my new masterpost about both #BookSpin & #BookSpinBingo can be found on my blog - https://thearomaofbooks.wordpress.com/bookspin-bookspinbingo-litsy-challenge - & this link is always available in my profile as well. ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks 1. Remember, this is a no-pressure challenge!! You can read one or both of these books. You can bail on them. You can bail on the whole challenge and try again next month. Whatever works!! This is supposed to be fun not stressful!! ⬇ 1mo

TheAromaofBooks 2. I do have a giveaway at the end of the year. Every BookSpin or DoubleSpin book completed counts as an entry!! In the past, I have tracked these myself, but for 2022 YOU are in charge of tracking your own entries!! To help with this process, I have created a Google Form that can be found here - https://forms.gle/X57ePKzuHpsqLjE5A - You can use this Form two different ways: You can update it throughout the year OR you can wait and fill in ⬇ 1mo
If you do not care about the giveaway you do NOT have to use this form at all ⬇ 1mo

The goal for #BookSpin is to get a book off your TBR, so if you decide not to ⬇
1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) finish it, it's still off the TBR and still counts as a completion in my book!!

6. If you do not finish your #BookSpin/#DoubleSpin book this month it is STILL ELIGIBLE for a giveaway entry as long as you complete it sometime in 2022!! There is space in the form for you both to put down what book you are SUPPOSED to read & then to check off which books you DID read! ⬇
1mo
TheAromaofBooks 7. Everyone is welcome to join this challenge!! If you wanted tagged & I missed you, it was completely inadvertent!! Please just let me know that you want to be added to the tag list. You can also let me know if you want to be removed - no hard feelings!! Feel free to jump in & out of this challenge as needed. Also, obviously, getting tagged doesn't mean you HAVE to actually participate!!

Pickpick

This one, originally published in 1859, was my July #BookSpin that I just finished this week - I had to give up on my chapter-a-day pace because I needed to know how it was all going to come together!! Keeping in mind the publication date, you would be correct in assuming that there are language and actions that don't fit our modern sensibilities, but I found it to honestly be a completely engaging look at life in the “wilds“ of the Virginia ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) mountains. “Old Hurricane“ is an Revolutionary War veteran who, through a series of events, ends up adopting an orphan girl named Capitola, mainly for his own selfish reasons - Cap is actually the long-lost heiress of a neighboring estate, currently owned by Hurricane's arch-enemy. However, Hurricane is not remotely nefarious (although very temperamental) and soon is completely won over by Cap's bold, saucy ways. Cap is no missish ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) heroine, waiting to be rescued. She makes things happen, charging about the countryside on her pony, rescuing people herself, and causing all sorts of trouble. This story is completely ridiculous, with melodramatic villains, sweeping coincidences at every turn, and plenty of absurdities, but I honestly enjoyed every page. 1mo

I have only read a few of Jewell's books but have really enjoyed them. This was one of my August #TrappedonanIsland books and I finished it just under the wire last night!! Not my favorite thriller of all time, but good pacing and characters I was rooting for. I did mostly figure out how everyone was connected, but still enjoyed seeing it all come together.

I've had this one since December 2020 when @HufflepuffGirl90 sent it to me for the #LitsyLoveWinterSwap so at least I am finally reading it!! I was a little slow getting into this one as I am never huge on the "evil psychopath child" trope (and wasn't the creepy kid in Baby Teeth also a Hannah???) but as the other storylines got going, I was totally sucked in. Even though it honestly got a little ridiculous at times, it was pacy enough to keep⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) me from asking too many questions. 😂 A fun read if you just roll with it.

This book is less than a hundred pages but I was completely engaged while reading it. Gloss doesn't bother explaining a lot of world-building, yet I felt like I had a clear idea of how things operated. This was definitely a worthwhile read. I also love this edition's simple cover.

Just look at this gorgeous #OwlCrate edition!! And I didn't get it in my photo but the edges are sprayed green as well!! I really enjoyed this fantasy. Overall the pacing was fairly good although it did bog down in spots. I liked the characters and was rooting for them, although the romance was not completely believable to me. This one is listed as a standalone, yet the final little epilogue definitely has a "in the next book" vibe?? Whilst ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) checking the author's website to see if there was anything about a sequel (nothing I could find) I did stumble across the one thing I felt this book was really lacking - a map! Why can't all books include maps!??! I printed it off and tucked it into this book for next time!

The Mystery of Edwin Drood | Dickens Charles

Pickpick

I'm quite a bit behind on book reviews, so there may be a small binge! This was my August #BookSpin draw. When I started it, I didn't realize that it is actually Dickens's final book, unfinished at the time of his death. I'm glad I found that out before I got to the end, because I would have been super annoyed lol As it was, I was able to mentally prepare as I read. At first I thought I had it all figured out, but honestly I do have a lot of ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) questions about where Dickens was going to go with some of these plot points and characters. I really liked the thriller-y aspect of it, and Jasper was an excellent villain with no one really suspecting him of being one.

Still working through Dickens's works, and I think this one would have been quite excellent in its entirety.
1mo
MrsK Unfortunately I was unaware of the end, or lack of, when I read this years ago. Still a great book though. Well worth digging out and reading again methinks🤔 1mo

Hey @Laughterhp - Here are the books that washed up on the beach for you this month!! I really enjoyed the tagged book and also The Girl With All the Gifts. I've read another Mackintosh book and thought it was really good - this one is still on my TBR 😂 And the other two just because they seemed like contrast for the others!! Happy reading!!

Thanks for hosting the #TrappedonanIsland challenge @aperfectmjk !!!

Laughterhp Oh I read the Dream Thieves last month! I should probably clean up my list and remove the books I‘ve read! Thanks for the other picks! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp - Just let me know if you need a new fifth book!! I'm trying to automatically (ish) keep my list updated by making it so that a book can't be on both my TrappedonanIsland shelf and my Read shelf... but it doesn't always seem to work! 😂 1mo

I was in a tearing hurry when I mailed my #FallingforFallSwap package last Friday and spaced on doing... oh, loads of important things like: taking a picture, writing “#FFFS“ on the package, or noting in any way that it's a Litsy package from me, other than my return address. 😂 So... surprise @Pigpen_Reads - I am your disorganized match, and you package should be there Friday!! 😁 It's in an old OwlCrate box!

Because our back room, which used to be a back porch, is a little funky in doorway/window placement, it's kind of turned into a glorified hallway. Husband and I really wanted it to be a place where we actually hang out, so yesterday we went to our awesome used furniture store in town and immediately found exactly what we wanted - a round chair that could be in a corner-ish space, and a bench (this one actually is a futon and folds flat!) that is ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) comfy but doesn't block the windows (this room is all windows/door along the south and west walls). I think we'll still be able to fit a small table/chairs in the other half of the room for games & puzzles. Current configuration, view out the window, and then my view if I face away from the windows - husband built these shelves four moves ago and I refused to abandon them!! 😂 Final picture - the furniture guy did NOT think my fabulous ⬇ 1mo

What in the heck!? There is only ONE WEEK of August left and that means I will be drawing September's (!!!!) #BookSpin #DoubleSpin #BookSpinBingo numbers a week from tomorrow!! So if you're planning to play along for September, it's time to start thinking about your lists!!

Remember, I'm using the same tag list all year, so just let me know if you want to be added or removed!!

This year, I have a list of challenging books that I am using to read the BookSpin number from each month, but then make a list of my month's TBR to use for the bingo part. Grrlbrarian I‘m stoked! Now what to put on my list 🤔 1mo
Librariana @TheAromaofBooks, can I kindly ask to be placed back on the list? I've fallen so... far? deep?... off the bingo wagon, that I'd just like back on so I can at least try to read a few things... feel a sense of accomplishment again. I did see your blog post about filling out a form at the end of last year (!!!), and I obviously missed the mark. So here I am! I'll read your comments ⬆️ to give myself a refresher. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Librariana - Absolutely!! Part of the reason I made this a monthly challenge is so that people can jump in and out as it suits their life circumstances!! Just let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to make the challenge work for you as far as how you put together your list, be it titles or categories or chunks of books - whatever helps you make progress and feel good about where you're going!!! 1mo
Librariana @TheAromaofBooks - I came back to clarify my earlier comment! For some reason, my brain read it last night as filling out a form (in my defense, I was tired!), not as replying to your post last year. Apologies! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Librariana - No worries!! The form is to help me with the end-of-the-year giveaway. Since every BookSpin & DoubleSpin completed (or officially DNFd) counts as an entry, it was a lot of paperwork for me to make sure I was finding everyone's posts!! This way everyone tracks their own and I should be able to merge the info into a spreadsheet in January for a much simpler giveaway drawing!! 1mo

TheAromaofBooks @Pageturner1 - Yay!! You weren't on my list, so I added you!! Let me know if you have any questions about the giveaway tracking - that's the only big change to the challenge this year!! 1mo

Pat of Silver Bush | Lucy Maud Montgomery
post image
Mehso-so

Borderline pan. This was definitely my least favorite Montgomery to date. I complained about it at length on GR (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4943465140) but to sum up - I've rarely read such a completely stagnant character. Pat went absolutely nowhere in the 10+ years this book covers. She's obsessed with keeping things the same and keeping everyone at Silver Bush at the age of 7, and she's exactly the same at the age of 19 in the end ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to the point of literally being so petty about anyone going on to do other stuff. Want to go to school, get married, pursue the career you love, or even shave off your own mustache? Here's Pat to make you feel like a horrible person for doing so. I wanted to like Pat, because I also love my home and love being in it more than anywhere else, but she was so self-absorbed that I couldn't deal. Her family did an absolutely dreadful job ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) helping her learn how to deal with change in a healthy manner, either catering to her whims, or literally waiting until she was somewhere else to do something they knew would make her very upset when she found out about it, like cutting down trees or butchering the pigs or moving a piece of furniture. Maybe the reason Pat doesn't want to leave is because you all do stuff behind her back all the time?? Maybe it would be better to have ⬇ 1mo
wordslinger42 I'm so sorry this wasn't a good read! Your commentary on it is hilarious, though. "Here's Pat to make you feel like a horrible person..." ? 1mo
See All 21 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) actual conversations with her instead??? This book also mildly annoyed because it went nowhere even more so than most of Montgomery's other books. I think because Pat herself wasn't changing or learning anything at all, the complete lack of any kind of plot annoyed me more than it normally would have.

Anyway, looking forward to discussing this one, obviously 😂 I also have the spoilers for Mistress Pat and will NOT be reading that one!
1mo
bookandbedandtea I think this is the first time I've ever heard a negative review of a LMM book and it's kinda refreshing! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @wordslinger42 - Pat got on my nerves so hard! 😂 I lost it when everyone was so worried about how she would “take“ the fact that her dad had shaved his moustache. She's like 10 at this point! Old enough to understand that sometimes people look different from before?! And sure enough, she pouted and cried and I was so over her haha 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea - When I first read Anne of Green Gables when I was 11ish, Mom told me I could read all of Montgomery's books but not to bother with the Pat books because they weren't that great. I'm 39 and like, “I can make my own book assessments now because I'm an adult!“ But you know what? Mom was right 😂 1mo
BarbaraJean 😂I love your review!! I had a very different reaction to Pat—my first read was in August 2020 and in that year of upheaval & craziness, all the descriptions of home & Pat wanting everything to stay the same were somehow very comforting. This time, I definitely see what you‘re frustrated about, but I COMPLETELY blame her family for giving her zero tools to navigate change. The number of times she hears family news from hateful May Binnie!! 🤬 1mo
BarbaraJean And as to Mistress Pat… the ending is a complete mess. Honestly I would love to hear your thoughts on THAT… but I wouldn‘t put you through reading it given your response to this one!! 😆 1mo
quietjenn This is the first #kindredspiritsbuddyread that I haven't even looked at and might not do so before the weekend, because I disliked this book/Pat so much the first time I read it (about 10 years ago). According to my GR I liked the second one better, but ... the thought of that might not be enough for me. 1mo
AnneCecilie Pat‘s dislike of change was one of the things I loved about her. It‘s interesting how we respond differently to the same character characteristics. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - I do see where you're coming from, and I know I was hard on Pat haha I also had a fabulous childhood and didn't want it to change, and it was hard when siblings started finding spouses and moving on to different things. But I felt like Pat's family was so horrid at actually helping to teach her that change is literally a part of life and you cannot stop it. They gave her no tools and I was worried about her as an adult! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - I've read the end of Mistress Pat and just.... it almost felt like Montgomery painted herself into a corner by making Pat SO obsessed with Silver Bush that the only way she could ever leave was if it wasn't there at all. I hate that Pat had that place of safety and security taken from her instead of being able to move on as an adult knowing that it was there (i.e. Green Gables). And it makes me 100% doubt her genuine love for ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Jingle because... she suddenly realized he was the love of her life AFTER she was homeless and Silver Bush was gone?? I don't really buy it. Her learning that she loved and trusted him enough to voluntarily leave Silver Bush would have been a strong story and a more believable romance. As for May Binnie... honestly, I blame Sid for being STUPID 😂 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @quietjenn - I think I'm going to take a pass on Mistress Pat next month. However, it has been interesting to read the Montgomery books I “skipped“ when I was growing up! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @AnneCecilie - I do get that, and I'm sorry I was rather hard on Pat! 😂 I got frustrated by her inability to cope with the inevitable changes in her life, and more frustrated by the way her family either caved in and didn't change or basically went behind her back and made the change in a traumatic way. I was honestly horrified when they cut down the tree without telling her ahead of time. 1mo
Librarybelle I‘ve not read this one by Montgomery, but it‘s making me not rush to read it either…😂 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Hahahaha! Mom is always right! 😂 1mo
lauraisntwilder Okay, so you're right on every point, but somehow I loved this book?? I think it's because it's really the only Montgomery I've read as an adult (besides the first Anne, which held no surprises). 1mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks YES about the ending of Mistress Pat. I had the same feeling: LMM wrote herself into a corner, had to hastily get herself (and Pat) out, and could only find an outlandish way forward in order to save herself from having to completely rewrite both books. There are so many better ways to resolve things, but it would have required some significant rewrites. Like perhaps Judy or Aunt Hazel helping Pat deal with change much earlier!! (edited) 1mo

The Small Bachelor | P.G. Wodehouse

Pickpick

This was delightful in the way only Wodehouse truly is. A young man falls in love with a young woman he sees out on the street; another fellow writes informative and educational pamphlets and scorns the concept of love at first sight; an ex-con valet tries to go straight and encourages his pickpocket fiancee to do the same; a man is bullied by this 2nd wife who holds the purse strings; a policemen is trying to become a poet; a young English lord ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) is hungry a lot; and there's about to be a raid on the Purple Chicken, where you can always get IT if you know the right people...

While it's never as fun when Wodehouse sets his books in NYC instead of England, where they belong, this one was still nonstop action and nonsense with the usual pile of both likable and unlikable characters, and justice handed out to all at the end. I snort-laughed my way through the entire thing.
1mo
TheAromaofBooks This fills my 1927 slot for #192025 @Librarybelle

Also, final #AwesomeAugust report, considering I didn't even post that I was participating... my goal was to hit 1500 pages, which I did!! I finished five books and made solid progress in my chapter-a-day reads (they accounted for 273 of my pages). The best reading week August has given me so far!! Thanks for hosting @Andrew65 !!!
1mo
Librarybelle Wodehouse is a good choice! Congratulations on hitting your goal! 1mo
mabell I agree - Wodehouse novels belong in England! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - This one was still fun and prohibition played a sizable part in the grand finale, but there is something about them being in England that just makes it all make sense! 😂 1mo

The Windowsill of Optimism is looking a bit more under control, which must mean there is only a week left before adding September's books 😂 The only “urgent“ book for this #WeeklyForecast is Pat of Silver Bush for August's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead - I'd also like to read His Majesty's Dragon. As for the rest, I'll continue with the random draw, although I think I only have two weeks until The It Girl is due at the library ⬇

Prairiegirl_reading The window sill of optimism. I love that! 💜 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) so it will probably be fairly high priority as well. Currently reading the tagged book - Wodehouse is always a great choice. I have to say that my windowsill system, just started this year, has been working great for me. I'm still excited about the books that are here, but also enjoy the monthly refresh/additions to keep things interesting!! Even if I am hopelessly behind!! 😁

TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - Technically we have a week and a half, since the 1st is on a Thursday, but I usually add the next month's books to the windowsill the Sunday before the 1st so... August went SO FAST!! 😵 1mo

My out-of-town relatives have departed, so while this week was quite busy, it didn't feel as out-of-control as the two weeks before that!! A little more reading was accomplished, but still slow - catching up on things around the house and still SO MANY PEACHES!! 😂 I'm more or less hopelessly behind on reviews, so here is the sum-up:
-Tagged book was my #LMPBC read and I really enjoyed it. Lots of humor and a fascinating glimpse into a different ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) era. Checked off 1930 for #192025 as well, plus Chicory Coffee for #Pantone2022.
-The Worst Best Man was okay, but I never warmed up to the MC, who spent most of her time whining. Plus, the whole “we're just having sex, it doesn't mean anything“ is definitely towards the bottom of my enjoyable romance trope list. Still, not a bad read, just not completely my style. This one was drawn as a #TBRDeckofCards read and also checked off 2020 ⬇
2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) for #192025.
-The Railway Children was a reread for me and this month's #ChildrensClassicRead - I absolutely loved it, as I do all of Nesbit's writing. I'd forgotten how much more grounded in the “real world“ this one is - no fantasy elements at all. I found myself wanting an entire book about the children's mother. You have to stretch credulity a bit because really, how many people can three small children save in one summer, but still ⬇
2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) overall delightful.
-Exposure has been on my TBR for a while. For some reason, I thought it was the adult perspective of The Railway Children, & it kind of is, except updated & set in the 1960s instead. I just wasn't feeling it so I bailed.
-Current read is The Small Bachelor by Wodehouse - absolutely delightful as always. ⬇

Hey friends!! Thanks so much for your comments on my other post - so glad you all are enjoying the #PromptMaze challenge, even if some of us are hopelessly lost in there! 😂 I realized after I posted it that I've done these quarterly and technically Q4 doesn't start until OCTOBER 1, not September. But since I (a) already created the Q4 maze and (b) am hoping to have a separate #Scarathlon maze for October anyway - here's the Q4 maze, quite early!⬇

TheAromaofBooks Anyone is welcome to join this just-for-fun challenge (I'm tagging the regulars). Just click on this link - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XzUxq7VU8jZt4TzOB-cQIOLgYr9NG5CZ--xoKsdr... - and when the document opens, click File and then Make a Copy. This will give you your own copy that you can edit, which will allow you to un-black-out the cells. This link includes all four of the prompt mazes that I have made so far. ⬇ 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I like to play all the mazes at once, and as I read a book, I just see if it fits anything for my current cell, and I only un-black-out cells as I get to them, but feel free to play however works for you - you can uncover them all and strategize, or whatever!! All the cells are just “filled“ in black, so to uncover them, highlight the chosen cell, click on the little paint bucket, and then choose the color you'd rather have. I keep ⬇ 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) completed cells white and my current cell teal, but make up whatever system works best for you!!

Happy reading!!

Hey there #PromptMaze friends!! Hopefully you aren't as lost as I am! 😂

I'm working on the Q4 Maze and will hopefully have that ready in the next few days!! I am also thinking that there will be a bonus Christmas/holiday maze that will match up with all the #WinterGames reads that I have planned, which also kind of got me thinking about a bonus maze for #Scarathlon - they probably won't be as long as the quarterly ones, but still!!

Let me ⬇

For my #WeeklyForecast the Windowsill of Optimism isn't looking too different from last week 😂 Out-of-state family goes home Tuesday evening, so things should calm down around here a bit after that. Peaches are still going strong, but last week should have been our high-water mark with those for the season as well. Currently reading the tagged (funny so far). I should have one more week of random-draw reads before I start panic-reading all the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) books I “have“ to read for August!! I think The It Girl is due back at the library week after next, so it will probably have a high priority this week. I can't believe how fast August is slipping by!!!

This has been a week of chaos!! Work is insane, family is in town, and things are a lil crazy! 😂 It looks like I've read more this week than I actually have, since 2 1/2 of these books I read last weekend haha Not a lot of reading happening, but overall life is pretty good and it's hard to complain. Really enjoyed both Mrs. Kip and The Hidden One. The tagged book I read for #TrappedonanIsland and liked it a lot - my biggest complaint was that ⬇

Cinfhen Glad you‘re having fun with family!!! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) there were a few things that it felt like the MC took FOREVER to realize, to the point that it kind of annoyed me haha But it was still a super fun read that I was glad to check off. So overall not the world's most productive #BookReport but I've also spent some great time with my family and sorted roughly 500 million peaches, so there is that!

I absolutely love the Kate Burkholder series, and book 14 did not disappoint! I'm always a bit sad when Kate's investigations take her away from Painter's Creek and the crew we have gotten to know there, but really, it makes sense since how many murderous Amish can there really be in one small town?? 😂 It's not absolutely necessary to read this series in order, but I highly recommend it, as Kate's backstory and character are developed so well⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) throughout the series. The mystery here kept me engaged, and even though I had guessed some of it, I didn't guess it all.

As a side note, I'm in love with Tomasetti 😂

This one is a little difficult to describe. Clara Kip is 79 and had just found out that not only does she have cancer, it is so advanced that she only has a week or two to live. With no living relatives, she enters hospice care. Meanwhile, 22-yr-old Aidyn Kelley is a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star, wanting to do more than fluff pieces and research for the senior reporters. When she makes a mistake, she's "punished" by being sent to ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) interview Mrs. Kip and write her obituary. But there is more to Mrs. Kip than meets the eye, and for a seemingly normal elderly woman, she has lived a very full life, including helping refugees from the Vietnam War.

If you aren't a Christian, this book may not be the best match for you. A lot of the story revolves around Mrs. Kip's faith, and how her beliefs inspired her to live the way that she lived. Her faith is also what is giving ⬇
2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) her confidence and comfort as she rapidly approaches death. For me, Mrs. Kip rode the line between inspiring and sounding fake, but I think that Brunsvold overall pulled it off. There is obviously a lot of conversation about death and dying in this book, including discussions about how our bodies shut down as we approach our final hours, so if that makes you uncomfortable, be aware. It's handled SO well, though, and I genuinely ⬇ 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) appreciated the way this book reminded us of the care and dignity everyone deserves during their final days.

While this wasn't a book that I'll read again and again, I did enjoy it, and honestly it made me cry in the end. I loved these thoughts from Aidyn about Mrs. Kip -

D-E-F for the #AlphabetGame - A Dog for Davie's Hill is one I picked up a book sale based on the illustrations and the fact that I love border collies. The story is a little disjointed, but still a pleasant story, especially for younger readers who may not be as distracted by the complete lack of plot haha

Emily's Runaway Imagination is classic Cleary and one of my favorites. I love this old library discard edition.

Forever is the third book ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) in Stiefvater's Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy(ish). I actually weirdly enjoyed these books, even though they're kind of outside my usual wheelhouse, and I LOVE the covers for these editions.
