Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Seek
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Seek: The Strange Case Continues | Anthony O'Neill
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
In this dark, atmospheric sequel to Robert Louis Stevensons timeless classic, the strange case continues with the return of Dr. Jekyll . . . Seven years after the death of Edward Hyde, a stylish gentleman shows up in foggy London claiming to be Dr. Henry Jekyll. Only Mr. Utterson, Jekylls faithful lawyer and confidant, knows that he must be an impostorbecause Jekyll was Hyde. But as the man goes about charming Jekylls friends and reclaiming the estate, and as the bodies of potential challengers start piling up, Utterson is left fearing for his life . . . and questioning his own sanity. This brilliantly imagined and beautifully written sequel to one of literatures greatest masterpieces perfectly complements, as well as subverts, Stevensons gothic classic. And where the original was concerned with the duality of man, the sequel deals with the possibility of identity theft of the most audacious kind. Constantly threading on the blurred lines between reality and fantasy, madness and reason, self-serving delusions and brutal truths, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Seek honors the original Stevenson with a thrilling new conclusion.

This really feels like Stevenson. Thrilled to be back in this strange world!
The parallels and echoes of the original classic feed my soul and make me whole! The opening walk with Enfield, the themes of duality and fraud and identity, the dinner party, even some exact same phrasing!
Completely engrossing from page one.
My only criticism, which is rather huge, is the ending. I found it rather unsatisfying given the incredible rest of the story.

A man claiming to be Dr. Henry Jekyll appears almost 7 years after his strange disappearance. Mr. Utterson, Jekyll's trusted friend and lawyer, knows the man is a fraud but must somehow prove it without revealing the truth of Jekyll and Hyde.
A well written sequel to the classic novella!

An intriguing sequel to the classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde:

✔ Plot driven gothic novella
✔ Pretty intense
✔ Fast-paced

❌ Rushed and puzzling ending
❌ Underdeveloped characters

Rating: 3🌟
