Nic Stone visited Columbia County as promised to discuss Dear Martin, racism, and censorship after her book was challenged in our schools.
My daughter and I watched the live stream since the event was sold out.
I laughed and I cried. So thankful she visited and discussed these important topics, what an honest and genuine discussion!

The county I live in just banned these three books that were suggested by teachers. I'm furious to see she essentially based literary value on the amount of f words in a book --- a pitiful excuse for what I believe is really her not wanting to deal with mature subject matter.

https://www.augustachronicle.com/news/20191008/columbia-county-schools-limit-nov...

wanderinglynn 🤬 There is no reason to ban books. Of course, if most kids are like I was, banning them just made me want to read it that much more. 😂 1mo
4thhouseontheleft 😠😤 1mo
Butterflyamore The Curious Incident... is such a great book and I know my husband loved Regeneration. I‘ve only seen the movie but it‘s clearly a great story. I‘m not familiar with the other one but now I‘ll have to check it out. 1mo
See All 12 Comments
Butterflyamore I have to add, having now actually read the article, that I feel part of educating children should include exposing them to material that depicts controversial material to help them better understand both history and current society from viewpoints that go beyond what one might learn in a standard classroom setting. Good literature allows that opportunity and helps minds grow, regardless of the amount of profanity tucked within the content. 1mo
Butterflyamore To shield students from that, especially knowing that they will be exposed to that in the real world again and again, seems absurd. I‘m sure there is far more to this than that. It‘s bothersome. 1mo
Scochrane26 I‘m pretty sure teens know what the f word is and say it frequently. 🙄i have elementary kids who also say it. I read the Curious Incident a few months ago & thought it was very educational for those of us who aren‘t on the autism spectrum. A different perspective. I haven‘t read the other 2, but I‘ve had Martin recommended by booksellers. It‘s definitely a different and important perspective (like the hate u give). 1mo
Scochrane26 Now that I‘ve seen Parks & Rec, I envision these people banning books as the woman who doesn‘t want Leslie to teach sex Ed. 1mo
kyraleseberg @wanderinglynn Absolutely- give a kid a list of books they can't read and it becomes their mission to do so (even those who claim they don't like reading!) 1mo
kyraleseberg @4thhouseontheleft Yes, that was seriously my face when I read the article this morning!! 1mo
kyraleseberg @Butterflyamore So well said, I agree completely! 1mo
kyraleseberg @Scochrane26 Right?! I think profanity was a lame excuse, she just doesn't want to deal with the reality and the questions these books pose to young minds. 1mo
kyraleseberg @Scochrane26 😂😂😂 Now I want to binge Parks & Rec again!! 1mo

My 3rd Ruth Ware and certainly my least favorite. Not a whole lot going on in this one; I guessed the secret almost immediately, cookie cutter characters for the genre, and the ending was twisty yet predictable. Still, it was entertaining enough to read in car line to pick up my daughter from school.

I absolutely loved the first book in this trilogy but everything I found charming about it began to wear thin in book two which needed some heavy editing. Still, I was looking forward to this final book and hoped it would recapture some of the magic of the first.
I was extremely disappointed that the pacing continued to be very awkward and there was little to no character development. I had to skim a good bit just to finish 😔

jillrhudy Oh no. I love the characters so much. I was hoping book 2 was just a fluke and she would do them justice in the third in the series. 2mo

My first Jojo Moyes and I loved it!
A historical fiction novel set in 1930's Kentucky following the lives of a group of pack horse librarians.
The writing was great and I appreciated the strong female characters.
Thanks to Pamela Dorman Books for providing me with an ARC!

Scochrane26 I‘m feeling conflicted about this one but will prob read it. The conflict—it‘s already been optioned as a movie. Meanwhile, I don‘t think the Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is going to be a movie. Book woman was written by an author who‘s actually from Appalachia & is about the same topic. It‘s had a lot of great reviews this yr. I‘ll still check out Moyes‘ to see if I like it. 2mo
kyraleseberg @Scochrane26 I enjoyed Book Woman also. I like that it explored another lesser known Appalachian history of "the blue people". The Giver of Stars was wonderful because it gives glimpses into the lives of several women, each with their own struggles and how they overcome them. I highly recommend both! 2mo

Whoa, this book took me by surprise! A fantastic crime novel that looks at racial tension in Texas and follows black Texas Ranger Darren Mathews as he investigates two murders in a small town. I was just as invested in the case as I was in Darren's personal life. This is the beginning of a powerful series and I'm happy to say the second book (Heaven, My Home - to be released 9/17) is just as powerful!

I adore this cozy series so much and appreciate the equal parts research and imagination that goes into creating new adventures for the Kopp Sisters. Whoa, this one really surprised me. It'll draw a lot of comparisons to Lord of the Flies, Hunger Games, The Power, and The Handmaid's Tale but this honestly stands on its own. An excellent dystopian about how female strengths are suppressed in male dominated societies and the roles religion and community play.
It's mature YA but certainly worth a read for any reader who appreciates a well-executed dystopian novel.

Quiet and matter of fact in its simplicity, this story packs a painful punch. Whitehead gives readers insight into the horrors faced by the boys at the "reform school" but is never overly descriptive or gratuitous with the violence, making it even more terrifying when readers are allowed to consider the full extent. I was not expecting the ending, which added another powerful level to the story.
