I love reading old diaries, and I love Doig‘s prose. So this introspective volume, which is a blend of history, memoir, and philosophy was a perfect calm read for this crazy month. Doig explores the diaries of a Washington State pioneer, James Swann, making connections across the decades and exploring the idea of what makes us go west. 4 ⭐️
“ . . . in Oregon, they have been the sounder citi zens, we in Washington the sharper strivers. Transport fifty from each state as a colony on Mars and by nightfall the Oregonians will put up a school and a city hall, the Washingtonians will establish a bank and a union.)”
Starting this on Kindle while I wait for the Messiah performance to begin. I love Doig‘s fiction. This is the first nonfiction by him that I have read.
