Dancing at the Rascal Fair
Dancing at the Rascal Fair | Ivan Doig
10 posts | 9 read | 4 to read
The central volume in Ivan Doig's acclaimed Montana trilogy, Dancing at the Rascal Fair is an authentic saga of the American experience at the turn of this century and a passionate, portrayal of the immigrants who dared to try new lives in the imposing Rocky Mountains. Ivan Doig's supple tale of landseekers unfolds into a fateful contest of the heart between Anna Ramsay and Angus McCaskill, walled apart by their obligations as they and their stormy kith and kin vie to tame the brutal, beautiful Two Medicine country.

This is a tale of two Scottish immigrants who come to America filled to the brim with dreams and naïveté. The book was as epic and sprawling as the land the homesteaders try to survive and build their lives on. Even if some plot points are a bit formulaic, Doig‘s writing style provides a depth I never expected. I look forward to more of his tales. If there isn‘t a PBS miniseries for this and possibly the whole trilogy, there needs to be one!

I think Doig is one of the most overlooked authors of our day. This was the first book of his that I read and, even though it is the middle of a trilogy, it stands on its own. I highly #adventrecommends anything by Doig. @emilyrose_x

Ivan Doig is #underrated in my opinion. His writing is gentle and poetic, and yet he evokes the wide open west of Montana in all its ruggedness. #31biokpics @howjessreads

Tamra I really like Doig‘s novels! 6y
KarmonR I am not familiar with Doig. Say more. 6y
Lcsmcat @KarmonR He‘s a Montana writer whose prose I think of as gentle and poetic. There are stories about people with tough lives, but they‘re not tough stories, if that makes sense. These 3 are a trilogy. A good intro might be 6y
KarmonR Thanks for recommending the starting point. :) 6y

Doig sets most of his work in Montana - Big #Sky country. I love his poetic writing, and this was the first of his works that I ever read. #coolbooks @Linsy

I always enjoy Ivan Doig's writing, and am happy to have finally read this one. It's a story of two immigrants making their home in Montana, with all the joys and tragedy that come with early pioneer life. It unfolds so beautifully and the characters tell their stories in such an authentic way, that I was sorry to see it end.

The pacing, the plot, the characters -- everything here feels authentic and timeless. I find myself pacing this one out, because I don't want it to end. Ivan Doig is amazing.
