Whyborne's Endicott relatives have returned to collect on the promise he made to help them take back their ancestral manor from an evil cult. In exchange, they'll give him the key to deciphering the Wisborg Codex, which Whyborne needs to learn how to stop the masters. To that end, Whyborne, his husband Griffin, and their friends Iskander and Christine travel to a small island off the coast of Cornwall. But when they arrive at Balefire Manor, Whyborne must not only face the evil within the ancient mansion, but the painful truth about his own destiny.

I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Each book in the series has increased in the use of magic so it‘s been a nice steady build up. Whyborne and Griffin are an awesome couple, that‘s a relationship that‘s developed over the series too. I like that nothing is rushed, that story points in one book pay off in another. I‘m sad the series is ending in another book or two.

When I read this line I thought of Elizabeth Peters‘ Amelia Peabody - who Christine reminds me of.

Look, even if you‘re not sure m|m romance is your cup of tea I still say give this series a try. It has awesome relationships, strong female characters, excellent weaving of fantasy into a historical setting, and librarians (they come into play in a later book). Also, when a librarian says, “One of the forbidden tomes? Excellent.” you know you‘re among friends. It‘s a little Indiana Jones meets Buffy meets The Librarians (the TV movies/show)

Hannah8 I‘ve never read that book before so I don‘t know 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @Hannah8 Which book? The tagged one? 5y
ReadingsByTheC That sounds amazing! 5y

Eyelit Is this the first book in the series? If no, what book starts it all off? 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @Eyelit It‘s book 10, I think there‘s one or two more and then it‘s done. There are a couple of novellas or short stories out too - one is f|f. The first book is Widdershins. 5y
Eyelit Awesome - thanks! 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @ReadingsByTheC @Eyelit I appreciate the series because the author recognizes that gay men aren‘t accepted during the time period of the book and that it‘s dangerous for them to be together. It‘s something that runs through the series. So you‘re grounded in something with fantasy woven into it. It adds tension and honesty, and allows for found family (something I love). 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @Eyelit You‘re welcome! You might want to check out the Hexworld series by the same author. It‘s a similar time period but in England, mostly. The magic is different and the books follow different couples. It‘s one I need to revisit because there‘s a new book coming out. (edited) 5y
Eyelit Nice! Another series to add to my tbr 😄 thanks again! 5y
jpmcwisemorgan @Eyelit Anything to suck more people into my obsessions! 😀 5y

Balefire is an excellent addition to the series. It was funny, sweet, and action-packed. I‘m beyond sad that there‘s only one more.

jpmcwisemorgan This one is near the top of TBR but I really don‘t want the series to end so I‘m kind of forgetting about it. 😊 6y
Mandigolightly @jpmcwisemorgan I feel you. I‘m not sure I‘m going to be able to bring myself to read Doesil 6y
jpmcwisemorgan Shhhh....I already had one of Rhys Ford‘s series end. My heart can‘t take it! 6y
