Button Man: A Novel | Andrew Gross

Following up The One Man and The Saboteur, Gross's next historical thriller brings to life the drama of the birth of organized crime in 1930s New York City from the tale of one family. After a string of New York Times bestselling suburban thrillers, Andrew Gross has reinvented himself as a writer of historical thrillers. In his latest novel, Button Man, he delivers a stirring story of a Jewish family brought together in the dawn of the women's garment business and torn apart by the birth of organized crime in New York City in the 1930s. Morris, Sol, and Harry Rabishevsky grew up poor and rough in a tiny flat on the Lower East Side, until the death of their father thrust them into having to fend for themselves and support their large family. Morris, the youngest, dropped out of school at twelve years old and apprenticed himself to a garment cutter in a clothing factory; Sol headed to accounting school; but Harry, scarred by a family tragedy, fell in with a gang of thugs as a teenager. Morris steadily climbs through the ranks at the factory until at twenty-one he finally goes out on his own, convincing Sol to come work with him. But Harry can't be lured away from the glamour, the power, and the money that come from his association with Louis Buchalter, whom Morris has battled with since his youth and who has risen to become the most ruthless mobster in New York. And when Buchalter sets his sights on the unions that staff the garment makers' factories, a fatal showdown is inevitable, pitting brother against brother. This new novel is equal parts historical thriller, rich with the detail of a vibrant New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, and family saga, based on Andrew Gross's own family story and on the history of the era, complete with appearances by real-life characters like mobsters Louis Lepke and Dutch Schultz and special prosecutor Thomas Dewey, and cements Gross's reputation as today's most atmospheric and original historical thriller writer.

Wow. Wow. Wow!! I saw this book at Goodwill and waivered over buying it (for a whopping $2.99 lol). It sounded interesting, but I have a pile of books on my TBR stack to get through. Well, my Aunt saw through that lame excuse and bought it for me, and I‘m so glad she did! I loved this story of the Rabishevsky brothers - this was a total page turner that I didn‘t want to put down. What other Andrew Gross books should I read? I‘m hooked now!

Aims42 Themes: 20th Century New York City (1905-1992), Mobsters, Coming of Age stories 4mo

A great historical thriller set in New York City in the 20s and 30s. Based on his family history in the garment industry and the Jewish mob in the unions. I enjoyed learning more about the mobs.

Since Andy made the courageous decision to move into the historical thriller field he has taken his game to a whole new level. The Button Man is simply fantastic. Just the right amount of historic information and atmosphere without sacrificing pacing or character development in the slightest. The powerful and painful relationship between the brothers makes this book unforgettable. A clear 5 stars to me, highly recommended.

In our house Andy Gross is a sure buy for every book, and a sure thing that both my husband and I will read it. His latest work in the historical thriller field is helping revive the genre. Andy was kind enough to pass along a copy of his next novel, Button Man to me, and I beat my husband to it!

tammysue Definitely picking this up when it‘s released. 😍 6y
Bookladylinda I ❤️ Andrew Gross!! 6y
Laura317 I love historical novels, however I did not know historical thriller was a thing! What Andrew Gross book should I start with? I need to check this out. 6y
KJHowe @laura317 Historical thrillers are a growing sub genre. This will be Andy‘s third book in that field. I would start with his The One Man. It was really a breakthrough. If you ever get a chance to hear him talk about why he wrote that book and how he had to go to war with his publisher to write the book of his heart, take it. It is a profound and moving story. Button Man is an historical family saga set in New York during the 20's and 30's. Story of the Rabishevsky brothers, (Morris, Sol and Harry) and how they learned a new trade. They became garment workers but had to fight the Italian mob. The plot moves quickly and painfully. The characters are very realistic and is essentially a good vs. evil tale. I would recommend it to those who like to read about NY and the Italian mob. NetGalley Early Review
