Desert of the Heart: A Novel | Jane Rule
3 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
“A landmark work of lesbian fiction.” —The New York Times Jane Rule’s first novel—now a classic of gay and lesbian literature—established her as a foremost writer of the vagaries and yearnings of the female heart Against the backdrop of Reno, Nevada, in the late 1950s, award-winning author Jane Rule chronicles a love affair between two women. When Desert of the Heart opens, Evelyn Hall is on a plane that will take her from her old life in Oakland, California, to Reno, where she plans to divorce her husband of sixteen years. A voluntary exile in a brave new world, she meets a woman who will change her life. Fifteen years younger, Ann Childs works as a change apron in a casino. Evelyn is instantly drawn to the fiercely independent Ann, and their friendship soon evolves into a romantic relationship. An English professor who had always led a conventional life, Evelyn suddenly finds all her beliefs about love, morality, and identity called into question. Peopled by a cast of unforgettable characters, this is a novel that dares to ask whether love between two women can last.

I can't say I loved every minute of this 1964 novel. It's meandering and plotless and the romance leaves me cold. But this part still rings true to me. Most queer people grow up being told that our desires are unnatural. We must eventually accept that they are are natural for us. For Evelyn, marrying a man was unnatural. This is a theme I can still relate to in 2k19.

I found a second copy at the Pride Centre: this one is also Talonbooks, but printed in 1991. Not sure what is on the cover, but it‘s called Winged Victory II and it‘s by Nancy Boyd.

Bloomingjen I think I have one somewhere with a diff cover. Maybe I can find it somewhere 6y
Lindy @Bloomingjen Yes! I‘d love to see it. 6y
lahousewyfe I haven't read the book, but I did see the movie! 6y
Lindy @lahousewyfe The movie is as good as the book. My sweetie and I intend to host a Desert Hearts-themed party sometime soon, to celebrate its 25th anniversary. 6y

A lesbian classic in the Pride Centre Library. I haven‘t seen this cover before (Talonbooks, 1980). #lgbtq
