This collection of essays was published in 1984 and includes work from the prior decade. With the exception of 2 essays, each piece could have been published today. Black and queer women still share Lorde's experiences 40-50 years later. I'm not sure what that says about our progress as a nation. Each piece was, of course, well written and thoughtful, and well worth the read. But damn do I long for the day when this isn't so relevant.

TheBookHippie I‘ve read this several times. Hits current every time 😵‍💫. It‘s so very good. 6h

Characters felt realistic. I loved especially the beginning of the book where a main character was grieving for loosing her close one. That was relatable.

The beginning was scarier than the rest of the book and that might have also made the beginning better.

This felt a bit repetitive: the same pattern happened several times. The last part was a bit luch.

This was quite YA for my taste but I did like it and I think it had great spooky sapphic Halloween vibes for YA readers. I loved the worldbuilding and the way the fantasy and romance fit together. Plus, how could I not give ‘vampire meets death oracle in high school‘ a pick rating??

We Set the Dark on Fire is a wlw, latinx inspired YA fantasy that incorporates modern-day political concerns, especially those emerging in the Trump era, and explores poverty, sexuality, misogyny and race and how these identities intersect.

Lesbian Charles Dickens! Twists to keep the reader guessing! The haves and the havenots in Victorian London. Mostly listened on audio, this was 24 hours long. Could it have been done in fewer hours!? I liked it but a bit too long for me. Finally got to this #AuldLangSpine pick from @IndoorDame

AlaMich This is a Korean film adaptation of the book that I highly recommend. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4016934/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk 2w

Think of this book as the story of an empath on steroids, brought on forcibly by the government. When two young sisters enter America seeking asylum, they are denied but given a very different kind of pathway to citizenship. This story brought to my mind the real American history of coercion, ‘medical‘ experiments, forced sterilization of BIPOC.

Suet624 Oh boy. Sounds rough. 3w
