Rosie Loves Jack
Rosie Loves Jack | Mel Darbon
6 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
Rosie loves Jack. Jack loves Rosie. So when they’re split up, Rosie will do anything to find the boy who makes the sun shine in her head. Even run away from home. Even cross London and travel to Brighton alone, though the trains are cancelled and the snow is falling. Even though any girl might find that hard, let alone a girl with Down’s syndrome. See the world through new eyes in this one-in-a-million story about fighting for the freedoms that we often take for granted: independence, tolerance and love.

I read this book initially because of the main character with Down Syndrome. I thought it was unique as those voices aren‘t usually a protagonist. It started good but I didn‘t really like the story in the end. I think Rose would‘ve been a good character on her own being independent not just relying completely on Jack and him being the focus. The middle was also odd and unnecessary. All in all it was just ok but extra stars for having a disabled MC

Rosie loves Jack. Jack loves Rosie. I thought this was going to be the usual light hearted teenage angst rom-com. How wrong was I??
Rosie will do anything to find the boy who makes her feel like ‘Rose‘.
She runs away from her home in London to find Jack. A strong, determined young woman....Did I mention Rosie has Downs Syndrome. This is the authors debut book. I couldn‘t put it down. Eye opening, emotional but brilliant at the same time.

1. Current read tagged. A YA rom-com with a difference.
2. Softcover-easier to read in bed as if I drop a hardcover I wake myself up 🤣
3. The Bookish life of Nina Hill

I fancied a change from paperbacks so I‘m attempting to read quite a few of my e-books on my kindle. Reading goal for 2021 is still going well, no new books purchased.
Heard some great reviews about this book so hope it doesn‘t disappoint.

This is a beautiful book, told from the perspective of Rosie, a teenager with Down Syndrome. Rosie runs away from home to be with her boyfriend Jack who her father has forbidden her from seeing, and the novel follows her journey as she tries to make sense of a confusing and frightening world. An inspiring book, and well worth the read 😊

It‘s difficult to review Rosie Darbon‘s debut YA contemporary romance. Although she convincingly portrays a young girl with Down‘s syndrome as a person with ambitions and emotions, a sex trade plotline struck me as implausible and seemed to show Rosie as a victim driven by others rather than by herself, which undermined her agency such that the book ends up being about the reactions to Rosie and how they drive her rather than about Rosie herself.
