pickThis is a compelling story about a young American woman‘s coming of age and sexual awakening while abroad in Denmark. Locascio did a really good job portraying in visceral prose the complicated emotions that accompany the early phases of sexual discovery for women. I liked that it delved into deeper political topics, though some of Zlatan‘s parts did feel forced. Roxana‘s internal conflicts are where the novel shines the most.

There she has an intense relationship with a lonely, depressed older man. This is a so-so for me because the narrative was muddied a bit by the inclusion of issues around refugees and nationalism. pickI'm still mulling over my thoughts, but I was intrigued by this boldly-written story of 18-year-old Roxana, an American in Denmark on a study programme. She becomes sexually entangled with an inscrutable Dane with a cruel streak & forges a connection with a Bosnian asylum-holder. The novel depicts Roxana's sexual awakening in intimate detail & fuses it with the political. It's the latter aspect that felt forced. Despite that, a captivating read.
