Mayor of Macdougal Street: A Memoir
Mayor of Macdougal Street: A Memoir | Dave Van Ronk
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) was one of the founding figures of the 1960s folk revival, but he was far more than that. A pioneer of modern acoustic blues, a fine songwriter and arranger, a powerful singer, and one of the most influential guitarists of the '60s, he was also a marvelous storyteller, a peerless musical historian, and one of the most quotable figures on the Village scene. Featuring encounters with young stars-to-be like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, The Mayor of MacDougal Street is a vivid evocation of a singular time and place--a feast not only for fans of folk music and blues, but for anyone interested in the music, politics, and spirit of a revolutionary period in American culture.

#folkieFriday Dave Van Ronk was a part the folk scene revival that was emerging in Greenwich Village in the late 1950s.His book is a wonderful look at living cheap to pursue your art.Something that seems nearly impossible today. The Coen Brothers movie , Inside Llewyn Davis ,was loosely based on this book.
Always the activist , he was 1 of 13 arrested during the Stonewall Riots, he was dining nearby, joined in when he saw what was going on.👍✊

I‘m calling it #folkiefriday Have some? .I try to see Dar Williams every time she tours .Lee Hays was a member of The Weavers .Inside Llewelyn Davis, the Cohen Brothers film ,was loosely based on the life ofDave Van Ronk.I treasure my beat up copy of American Songs and Folk Songs. And my beat up early Dylan songbook.

Theaelizabet My father-in-law always reminded me of Lee Hays—in looks and demeanor, not politics.😉 Great collection! 5y

jmofo I hope you enjoy this Van Ronk is quite the raconteur! I grew up loving folk music when other kids were listening to NKOTB so I enjoyed the insights. 6y
