I have a much greater understanding of this story and who the titular unexpected ally is after listening to the audiobook. I certainly enjoyed the story more this second time around as well. I also have a mic better understanding of the role of this story within the greater story of the series.

GingerAntics @Texreader it finally dawned on me, after listening to the audiobook who the ally is. Like The Lost Brother, there are actually multiple answers. Susannah is one. The less obvious one is Br. Anselm. He was allied with the band of thieves and ultimately Cadwaladr. I can‘t believe I didn‘t see that before, now that I‘ve seen it. 2y

I‘m excited to charge ahead with this next book. I enjoyed the last one so much more this second time around, I‘m looking forward to this one even more now. This wasn‘t our favourite last time. It will be interesting to see how it goes this time.

My least favorite book in the series. There‘s just too much going on in this book compared to the others. It‘s more into political intrigue, which I don‘t find as interesting, than murder mystery. Gwen‘s role was reduced dramatically as well and I miss her insightfulness and wit. And who is the Unexpected Ally? Conall? Susannah? Someone else? I do like the sometimes ambiguous titles in this series. Three stars.

GingerAntics I was wondering the same thing. Is it supposed to be the aunt? I didn‘t like that the uncle managed to just get away with all his BS in the end. This was definitely one of my least favourite. I did like the part at the end with Llelo, though. 6y

A little Welsh humor (which is my kind of goofy humor too): Gareth is investigating a murder, interrogating everyone. So he asks about the cows who were probably in the pasture near where the murder took place:
“Where are the cows now?”
Answer: “In one of the pastures. I‘m afraid you won‘t get much out of them.”

GingerAntics Loved that bit, too. lol 6y

5🌟 It turns out Cadwaladr‘s reach is much wider than we thought. He‘s trying to rustle up trouble from wherever he‘s hiding at the moment. Luckily, Gareth and Gwen are shutting him down at every turn. I like Gareth and Gwen being together. Bad things happen when they are apart. It‘s also good to see Prince Hywel taking on his role as edling. Everyone seems to be feeling a bit better two books on from the tragedy. #sarahwoodbury #theunexpectedally

GingerAntics #garethandgwen #welshhistory #historicalfiction Another great book in this series. Not quite as satisfying the others because we didn‘t get all the answers at the end, but still a good story over all. They can‘t really have a 100% success rate or it just wouldn‘t be realistic, so I suppose it‘s a good thing we didn‘t get quite all of the answers. Another great little bit, it seems Gwen‘s father, Meilyr, is moving on from his late wife just a bit. (edited) 6y

Texreader I had Pawl figured out but not Lwc. Interesting 6y
GingerAntics @Texreader Pawl is pretty easy. It‘s almost more of a phonetic spelling, in a way. Lwc took me a minute, but then I looked up the pronunciation guide and verified it online. I had to teach my phone to read it as Luke, though. lol 6y

I fear I have now surpassed @Texreader and she might be upset when she sees this; although, she should note that this is simply because I have no life outside of books (and these books in particular at the moment). lol Such a nice ending to the last one that definitely leads right into this one. I can‘t wait to see what happens next. Here we go. #sarahwoodbury #theunexpectedally #garethandgwen
