The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation)
The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics | Daniel James Brown
8 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
The #1 New York Times bestseller about the Greatest Generation freshly adapted for the next generation. For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Great Depression comes the astonishing tale of nine working-class boys from the American West who at the 1936 Olympics showed the world what true grit really meant. With rowers who were the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washingtons eight-oar crew was never expected to defeat the elite East Coast teams, yet they did, going on to shock the world by challenging the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler. At the center of the tale is Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, whose personal quest captures the spirit of his generationthe generation that would prove in the coming years that the Nazis could not prevail over American determination and optimism. This deeply emotional yet easily accessible young readers adaptation of the award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller features never-before-seen photographs, highly visual back matter, and an exclusive new introduction. From the Hardcover edition.

The boys in the boat is a historical book about a rowing team that went to the 1936 olympics and the hardships the team had to overcome in order to win the gold medal. If you like books that motivate you and give you a new perspective on teamwork and perseverance this is a book for you. The POV of this book is a third person omniscient as it follows the story of the whole team, however it does primarily focus on one character, Joe Rantz

MissYaremcio Nicely done Adrien! This looks like an interesting read! 6/6 2y

My son and I started listening to this today. It made him put his phone and iPad down. If that isn‘t a recommendation, I don‘t know what is!

I loved this story! I didn't know anything about this book and I am glad I picked it. I was cheering for this team and for Joe to come out on top from the beginning. Especially after the way Joe's father and step mother treated him. What an amazing true story and history lesson wrapped in one.

This was weird. I downloaded two versions of this book so I could listen without delay on two devices not realizing they were not identical. I couldn't find my place in the second version and didn't know why until now. I'm bummed out because I listened to the edited book.☹

Smrloomis Oh no! 😕 the original was really good... 7y
Dolly @Smrloomis Abridged or edited editions is a serious pet peeve of mine. 😡 7y
Donna_sBookMinute They should've used different covers. 7y

Dolly @Donna_sBookMinute They did have different covers but I've seen different covers before when books had the same 'innerds' The cover here says 'unabridged' and 'adapted for young readers' I guess I don't know how to read the info on the cover. 🤔😉 7y
Smrloomis @Dolly @Donna_sBookMinute agreed! Adapted but unabridged is confusing to say the least. 7y
Donna_sBookMinute ?? @Smrloomis, @Dolly -- I stay away from abridged editions. I mostly see it in audiobooks. But "adapted" is the key word. Tells me it's been edited. 7y
Kaylamburson Oh yeah, Penguin has been creating young reader's editions of a bunch of books lately. Sorry this happened to you! If it makes you feel better, I think it's just supposed to be more simplified wording, but all of the ideas and points should be the same. 7y

The Boys in the Boat is well written and inspiring. The story of Joe's life, the assimilation of the rowing crew & the historical details were fascinating. The amount of dedication, adversity that was overcome, & eventual trust and willingness to be in the race for the good of the team and not the individual truly was inspiring. The Boys in the Boat is a fantastic story that I wholeheartedly recommend. {I completed this audiobook on Aug 8, 2016}

Rowan enjoyed the original on audio, but select portions were skipped - Nazis are best discussed obliquely with sensitive six-year-olds. This version has more telling than showing compared to the original, and still plenty of drama and tragedy.
