The Curse of Oak Island
The Curse of Oak Island | Randall Sullivan
6 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
In 1795, a teenager discovered a mysterious circular depression in the ground on Oak Island, in Nova Scotia, Canada, and ignited rumors of buried treasure. Early excavators uncovered a clay-lined shaft containing layers of soil interspersed with wooden platforms, but when they reached a depth of ninety feet, water poured into the shaft and made further digging impossible. Since then the mystery of Oak Islands "Money Pit has enthralled generations of treasure hunters, including a Boston insurance salesman whose obsession ruined him; young Franklin Delano Roosevelt; and film star Errol Flynn. Perplexing discoveries have ignited explorers imaginations: a flat stone inscribed in code; a flood tunnel draining from a man-made beach; a torn scrap of parchment; stone markers forming a huge cross. Swaths of the island were bulldozed looking for answers; excavation attempts have claimed two lives. Theories abound as to whats hidden on Oak Island--pirates treasure, Marie Antoinettes lost jewels, the Holy Grail, proof that Sir Francis Bacon was the true author of Shakespeares plays--yet to this day, the Money Pit remains an enigma. The Curse of Oak Island is a fascinating account of the strange, rich history of the island and the intrepid treasure hunters who have driven themselves to financial ruin, psychotic breakdowns, and even death in pursuit of answers. And as Michigan brothers Marty and Rick Lagina become the latest to attempt to solve the mystery, as documented on the History Channels television show The Curse of Oak Island, Sullivan takes readers along to follow their quest firsthand.

One of the few shows I watch on TV. Fascinating to see what they dig up and the history behind each item.

Pickpick

This is a pretty great summary of the treasure hunt thus far. The author does a great job of remaining neutral and factual. Towards the end, there‘s a great deal of speculation as to who might have left the treasure, which was less interesting. I was more interested in the history discovered thus far.

I just finished reading this and it was pretty good. Sullivan does a really good job telling the story of what happened on that island, the discovery of the pit and the treaure hunt that is still happening! I got bored with the conspiracy theories around it. But that was essential to what drives the hunt. I was interested in the how and thats an interesting and unanswered question. Thanks Edelweiss for this arc in exhange for a review.

This is what I‘m starting now. I headd about this island years ago on an episode of Oak Island. I‘ve always found it really interesting. Hoping to learn a few things with this one!

Hooked_on_books This sounds really interesting. And I love that cover! 6y
TheNextBook @Hooked_on_books the cover I guess is based on the show! So far the book is really well done. He inserts his opinion a lot which is kind of annoying. But there is so much history on this island and he is laying it all out 6y
