#IPutASpellOnYou

Just spent an hour going through the differences between British English and American English, spelling and words and pronunciation. My son has a test on Thursday.

My trusted "Swan" helped.

GingerAntics Your son has a test on the difference between American and British English? What class is this? I would take that class!!! 6y
julesG @GingerAntics It's part of his regular English as a Second Language course in school. He's in his 8th year. (4 years primary school, then secondary school) Year 8 has the United States as main topic, the first Unit is about New York. Last year they talked about the different parts of the United Kingdom. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics We live in Germany, by the way. 6y

GingerAntics Oh that sounds interesting. ESL is much different there than here. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics It is. ESL in an English speaking country is often focused on adult learners who didn't have the chance to learn the language in school. 6y
GingerAntics Good point. Love that they get 8 years to really dig into it. They‘ll have a different understanding and ability to use the language. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics Well, actually, if my son finishes with his "Abitur" (University entry level exam), he'll have 12 years of education, including 12 years of ESL, under his belt. But the first four years in primary school only included very basic stuff. 6y
GingerAntics Wow, that‘s impressive. You have to start somewhere. I actually learned German that way back when I was really young. I‘m sorry I didn‘t get to continue learning it after age 8. 6y
GingerAntics I‘m always intrigued by the way other countries educate their children. It‘s so interesting to see the different things that are seen as important. That could be because the American education system is total rubbish and I want to learn from other systems that actually manage to prepare their students to do something in the world other than follow directions. The idea of kids being kids no longer exists in American education. 6y
julesG @GingerAntics The German education system is by no means perfect, but I'd hazard the guess that kids do learn a few things. Although I always tell my kids that in the olden days, when I went to school, it was all more strict and we learned far more, yada yada. 😂 6y
julesG @GingerAntics What I don't like about the British vs American English phase in school is, that it confuses weaker students. Weaker students tend to mix British and American spelling and get marked down for it, because they have to stick to one sort of English. 😵 6y
GingerAntics That would be frustrating. I‘ve always sucked at spelling, so I could see that really messing with my head. They can do either as long as they stick with one? That‘s cool. Yeah, sometimes I wonder if kids are learning anything here. It‘s like everything is about following directions. After that, they don‘t care. They want a passive work force that won‘t ask any questions. 6y
Cinfhen Impressive!! My spelling sucks too @GingerAntics 6y
julesG @GingerAntics Yes, stick to either of the two. 6y
