Pickle's Progress
Pickle's Progress | Marcia Butler
3 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Marcia Butler's debut novel, Pickle's Progress, is a fierce, mordant New York story about the twisted path to love. Over the course of five weeks, identical twin brothers, one wife, a dog, and a bereaved young woman collide with each other to comical and sometimes horrifying effect. Everything is questioned and tested as they jockey for position and try to maintain the status quo. Love is the poison, the antidote, the devil and, ultimately, the hero.

This is about four NYC residents who are deeply damaged and fundamentally unlikable. Be warned. But I like that kind of thing if it‘s well written and full of curveballs. This one is. The author clearly loves her city, but like these relationships, it has an ugly underbelly. I‘m glad I was only a tourist in their lives!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Plus I got to meet the author yesterday and she‘s lovely!

A bit of a genre buster. I think it was supposed to be satirical but I wasn't quite sure. Stan & Karen, two drunk yuppies, almost run over a woman whom they decide to take in. Stan's identical twin Pickle deveops a thing for her. The characters are really well written but the plot meanders around a bit witb Karen and Pickle musing about the past and the ending drove me nuts!

Been working my way through this ARC, which was published in April. I liked the author‘s harrowing memoir, but am really hoping this isn‘t quite as dark. So far, it is dysfunctional relationships with some dark humor. And a dog call The F‘ing Doodles (except the author spells it out)!
