The Old Wives' Fairy Tale Book | Angela Carter
6 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Fairy tales, folk tales, stories from the oral tradition, are all of them the most vital connection we have with the imaginations of the ordinary men and women whose labour created our world." -- From the Introduction There was a time when fairy tales weren't meant just for children -- they were part of an oral folklore tradition passed down through generations. This volume of sixty enchanting and enduring tales, collected by master storyteller Angela Carter, revives the industry, eccentricity, spirit, and worldly wisdom of women in preindustrial times. Drawn from narrative traditions all around the world -- from ancient Swahili legends to Appalachian tall tales to European spirit stories and more -- these tales together comprise a unique feminine mythology. Angela Carter (1940-1992) was widely known for her novels, short stories, and journalism. Her many books include The Magic Toy Shop, The Sadeian Woman, Nights at the Circus, Fireworks, and Saints and Strangers.

Pickpick

I enjoyed this book of fairy tales curated by Angela Carter; some very familiar as antecedents to well known tales like Cinderella, others were complete new. Lots of humor and the tales crossed the globe.

I've been wanting to read something by Angela Carter for awhile now, but haven't come across any books. I found this book at a library sale and got excited when I saw her name. Unfortunately she's only the editor, but it's still a cool book! Plus check out the awesome illustrations!

#RiotGrams Day 26: I got these fabulous books of #FairyTales from a librarian friend who also left Singapore last year after living here for around ten years. I think I got several suitcases worth of treasures such as these from her personal, gently-used, beautifully-curated collection.

batsy Treasures indeed. Fabulous 😍 7y

Have to love a fairy tale book with hillbilly stories that include dismemberment!

Edit: I forgot to mention that this is actually the SECOND Virago Book of Fairy Tales, which is not yet in Litsy's database. I will have to look for the first one!

A librarian friend is leaving Singapore. We have just packed FIVE boxes of books to be shipped to my former elementary/high school in Manila as part of our literacy project for our 25th year Homecoming this year. The shipping of the books will be shouldered by the International School Library Network, for which I am immensely grateful. This is my personal loot from my friend's amazing collection. Truly an awesome book collector.
