Third grader Yuki Tachibana lives in two worlds. In one world, he is a loner ridiculed by his classmates and reprimanded by his teachers for telling stories of supernatural beings that only he can see. In the other world, the supernatural beings vie for power with malevolent spirits who bring chaos into the school, the students' lives, and nature itself. -- VIZ Media

#TopTenoftheYear #2018 countdown: #4
A strange sci-fi/fantasy involving spirits and other realities. Mastsumoto is such a master at creating atmosphere I can still feel the story. The panels are dynamic, gorgeous, and unsettling. Go Go Monster is one of my favorite comics I‘ve ever read.

This bookis surreal. I adore the art style, which has a much messier, organic feel than many other manga titles. The balance of negative space and the clever panel transitions do a phenomenal job creating an atmosphere of unease. The narrative follows Yuki as he becomes more and more sucked into the other. There's a lot of cool symbolism and subtle horror. Definitely worth checking out.

The way Matsumoto works with panels and symbolism is awesome. I love this section of the book where things are at there darkest after Yuki goes through the black door. A very compelling style that works super well for creating a very creepy narrative.

So much work went into this book. It looks so gorgeous with its coloured edges and it‘s sturdy cover. Which is why I‘m so confused as to why the slipcase is a cheap cardboard. The bottom is even coming loose. I‘ll have to re-glue it. The book is a weird combination of good and cheap materials. Bizarre.

I‘m halfway through the book and loving the subtle, creepy vibe. Matsumoto is excellent at creating two atmospheres existing together: one of a vibrant school and one of a phantom world living alongside it. Not an easy feat, and one that Matsumoto pulls off expertly.
