Spell | Ann Lauterbach
3 posts | 7 to read
A new collection of provocative work from the author of Or To Begin Again, a finalist for the 2009 National Book Award in Poetry Ann Lauterbach is one of America's most inventive poets, acclaimed for her fierce, sensuous, and intellectually charged work. In her tenth collection, Spell, Lauterbach activates the many meanings of "spell": her sense that the world is under a spell from which it must awaken, to spells of passing weather, to her desire to spell out life's difficulties and wonders, and how sin-gle words (and their etymologies) might inform and enlighten our contemporary condition. In short poems, poem sequences, and a series of "Conversations with Evening," Lauterbach calls upon all her imaginative resources to locate a new hybrid poetics of reality, with wit, urgency, and candor.

“Friendships went south. We could not
name our freedoms, only the pause between days
in which all matters of belonging
densely accrued, then
scattered.”

Recommitting to poetry this year. Last year, I almost had it. I went about six months, reading poems in the morning before ever reaching for technology (#poemsbeforephones). It was a beautiful way to start the day. Then, I started my MLIS program & began sleeping with my textbook on my nightstand, instead. *Significantly* less beautiful. 🙈

Cont‘d 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: I don‘t know if I‘ll be as vigilant this year, making poetry happen every morning of every day...but I‘ll make every effort to make sure it‘s ever-present. I resolve to move my current collection to the *top* of the pile on my nightstand every evening, so that it‘s always waiting for me to wake up, see it clearly, and reach for it. Much like life. ✨ 4y

@JoScho There were so many goodies in my #basicwitchswap box to unpack! Everything is glorious. I‘m so excited about the Anniversary Edition of Bunnicula! I don‘t own it yet, though I recently convinced a kid to read it with zero words; I just showed him the cover & it did all the work for me. The bag is perfection, the candy will be our dessert tonight, & I‘m going to read the short stories to my husband before bed (he always asks for some). 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: I started flipping through the self-care book & I noticed a section about candle magic, which is very cool! I purposely left out the print you were so eager to send me. I‘m going to dedicate a special feature to it in the morning. I *love it! LOVE. Though the mug did not make it (RIP mug), my hub‘s promised to glue the cauldron back together. The eucalyptus candle smells AMAZING. I‘m so thrilled! Happy Halloween! ✨🌒🔮 4y
JoScho I am so glad you love all your goodies but so very sorry the cauldron and mug didn‘t make it to you safely. I hate that. Happy Halloween to you! 🔮🖤 4y
monalyisha @JoScho That‘s okay! It happens! The mug looked super-cute; you did a great job picking it out! (edited) 4y

monalyisha @JoScho Candy count: one Reese‘s bat & one Milky Way. I‘m exercising restraint. We‘ll see how long that lasts. 😅 4y
