Got to page 81 on this one and giving up. Way too many detailed character descriptions, mostly physical and some personality, and not enough plot. Dull main character. Also, as a teacher, wasn‘t particularly looking forward to the teacher falling in love with a student anyway. Ick.

merelybookish @LeahBergen I remember that from Villette! Her judginess feels harsher in this one. Maybe because she's expressing it through a male character, she doesn't feel the need to temper her views. 5y

This reads like a first novel in it structure. Her talent for creating quirky, thorny and lovable characters is evident. I found this a delight.

The Professor | Bronte Charlotte

This book makes me think about the Seinfeld television show. It is really a book about nothing but ordinary lives. However, the book is extraordinary because the characters realize the importance of a good education and hard work. They overcome obstacles and improve their lives. Then of course, there is Charlotte Bronte's extraordinary writing.
