The Professor
The Professor | Bronte Charlotte
8 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
The Professor was the first novel by Charlotte Bronte. It was originally written before Jane Eyre and rejected by many publishing houses, but was eventually published posthumously in 1857 by approval of Arthur Bell Nicholls, who accepted the task of reviewing and editing of the novel. The book is the story of a young man, William Crimsworth, and is a first-person narrative from his perspective. It describes his maturation, his loves and his eventual career as a professor at an all-girls school. The story starts off with a letter William has sent to his friend Charles, detailing his refusal to his uncle's proposals to become a clergyman, as well as his first meeting with his rich brother Edward."

Bailedbailed

Got to page 81 on this one and giving up. Way too many detailed character descriptions, mostly physical and some personality, and not enough plot. Dull main character. Also, as a teacher, wasn‘t particularly looking forward to the teacher falling in love with a student anyway. Ick.

Oh Charlotte, such deep disdain for Catholics and Belgians in #Theprofessor. 🙄

LeahBergen And yet she actually (shockingly and sinfully, as the daughter of a Parson) went to confession once while she was there. 😮 And felt unrequited love for a Belgian. So ... what are you saying, Charlotte? 😆 4y
BookishMe I am still irritated by William's insolence and lack of gratitude in Chapt 6! Yet the opening lines of the following chapter ;o 4y
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen That is interesting! 4y
batsy @LeahBergen Quite a bit of "the lady doth protest too much" there! 4y
merelybookish @LeahBergen I remember that from Villette! Her judginess feels harsher in this one. Maybe because she's expressing it through a male character, she doesn't feel the need to temper her views. 4y

Pickpick

This reads like a first novel in it structure. Her talent for creating quirky, thorny and lovable characters is evident. I found this a delight.
@BookishMe

BookishMe Absolutely. Even her thorny characters intrigue me instead of repelling 4y
batsy @BookishMe @rmaclean4 Yes, I agree. Still at the beginning of the book and I can see the elements of novice writing here but even that I find fascinating. 4y

The Professor | Bronte Charlotte

This book makes me think about the Seinfeld television show. It is really a book about nothing but ordinary lives. However, the book is extraordinary because the characters realize the importance of a good education and hard work. They overcome obstacles and improve their lives. Then of course, there is Charlotte Bronte's extraordinary writing.
