How to Sit
How to Sit | Tyrese L. Coleman
5 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
"In How to Sit, Tyrese Coleman investigates the border between fiction and non-fiction in a way that calls to mind Tim O'Brien's powerhouse The Things They Carried, but here the subject is the trials of black girlhood and womanhood, the dislocation of class mobility, and the impossibility of making sense of it all. Coleman has written a short work with more insight, heart and truth than the entire catalogues of even some of the best writers." -- Rion Amilcar Scott, author of Insurrections [back cover].

Personal essays touching on sexuality, growing up, motherhood, and identity. Funny and cutting.

#top10ofthedecade #nonfiction was easier for me, I think! If you haven‘t read the tagged book yet, think about stacking it. The author artfully plays with the ideas of fiction and nonfiction in a beautiful way.

Chelsea.Poole Thanks for the recommendation! I've never heard of this one. 😊 5y
Cinfhen Not familiar with tagged book or a few others you choose. Will have a look/ thanks for sharing 🤓 5y

This collection of short stories about the author‘s life work together to create a loose memoir. While I did not like the way the stories jumped back and forth between childhood and adult life (I would have rather it be more chronological), there is some pretty stunning prose in this book. Most of the stories deal with her relationship with the women in her family, particularly her mother, grandmother, and a great aunt. 4⭐️

Starting How to Sit by Tyrese Coleman! I bought it because of one of the un-ignorable Powell's endcaps. Powell's endcaps are works of art.
