Was looking forward to gleaning some good long-term traveling tips here, but Potts is too vague for my taste. I get the sense of reading the whole book and not really learning anything besides one practical packing tip or two. If you just want a book chock-full of inspirational “get-out-there-and-do it!” quotes, this is the guide for you. Or read it for the lists of Google-able online travel resources provided at the end of each chapter.

danx Yeah I whipped through this and promptly got rid of it. Agree in its vagueness and generally not being very useful. I‘d have liked some practical things like tax tips for vagabonds, travel ‘hacks‘ etc. 2y

I bought this after Tim Ferris raved about it being amazing. I didn't get much out of it and ended up skipping through. I think it'd be good for someone stuck in a rigid frame of mind, who really needs to break out our who is terrified of travel. But for myself, nothing amazing here.

I absolutely love this book! It is full of inspiration! It is full of wonderful stories, quotes and advice for someone interested in traveling. Having only used my passport for the past 3 years regularly, this book provides me with affirmation and encouragement. Just got home from Rome. Leaving for Ireland in 3 weeks. Leaving for Jamaica in 5 weeks. KY Bourbon Trail in 9 weeks. Travel on!!!

Trying to finish this book. I did not do any reading while traveling in Rome because I was too busy enjoying the amazing city. I was a traveler in Rome, not a tourist. I meandered around the city not paying attention to the map..while I may have been lost, I was never lost..I knew exactly where I was..I was where I wanted to be..exploring a new piazza or a new street. Rome is an awesome city to be lost in. In fact, I think I found myself here.

This is a great book! I'm currently obsessed with travel and I'm trying to do as much as possible while working full-time job. This quote really stands out to me as I have friends that prefer to simply collect passport stamps. I'm more interested in experiencing awesome, new adventures regardless of how many stamps are in my passport.

Adventurous men enjoy shipwrecks, mutinies, earthquakes, conflagrations, and all kinds of unpleasant experiences. They say to themselves, for example, "So this is what an earthquake is like," and it gives them pleasure to have their knowledge of the world increased by this new term." --Bertrand Russell

The naturalist John Muir used to say that the best way to prepare for a trip was to "throw some tea and bread into an old sack and jump over the back fence."

The world is a book, and those who not travel read only one page. --St. Augustine

So far, this is a great book. If you love travel or dream of being a traveler, you should read this book. I am only 1/3 finished, but I am enjoying it immensely.
It is a nice break from more more intense, social justice books.
