Trying to get back on track with the monthly Agatha Christie reading. Even though I like Hastings, he was not as missed as expected because Katherine made a good sidekick. It is a good story, but I don‘t like how Christie/Poirot sometimes uses information we as the reader don‘t get and can‘t come up with the solution on our own - not that it often happens to me. 🤣

BLUE TRAIN offers readers the classic ingredients of a Christie mystery—an exotic setting, a glamorous cast of characters, and a puzzling murder—but it‘s one of her more uneven works, which is why I'm a month late finishing it with the #ChristiesCapers group. The plot takes a while to build momentum. Much of the first third is setup, and the murder itself occurs relatively late. ⬇️

dabbe The investigation that follows can also feel disjointed at times. Christie reportedly wrote THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE TRAIN during a personally difficult period following her mother‘s death and her own divorce. She later expressed dissatisfaction with the book, though it contains the seeds of themes and techniques she would refine in later novels. Heard of The Orient Express, anyone? 2mo

so-so

I joined #ChristiesCapers for this month‘s read. The male characters (except for the rich American and Poirot) all seemed too alike for me. The women were more memorable. And the rubies…😍 The mystery was ok, I guess, with hints of romance. Hoping for better with the October book!

Librarybelle @kspenmoll He‘s doing very well. I visited my parents yesterday, and he said that he‘s still finding he cannot quite think of the right word to say at times but has seen an improvement. He‘s waiting for his cardiologist to get back to him to set up tests; they still don‘t know where the clot came from that caused the stroke, but they‘re pretty positive it was not from the brain. Thanks for asking! 3mo

willaful I would like to have seen Lenox get a happy ending, but I guess we just have to rely on Poirot's intuition. 😁

George is definitely fun and Jeeves-y, though of course Poirot would never need a Jeeves. (Hastings could use one!) The next book we read is even more Wodehousian, IIRC. 3mo

suvata Mirelle adds a layer of intrigue with her theatrical personality and questionable motives. 3mo

MariaW I liked Katherine, she somehow eeplaced Hastings as the sidekick and Poirot always tends to find someone who is helping him - even unconsciously. To me Lenox was the only one who spoke her mind honestly and without any ulterior motive, that makes her a lovable character as well. 6d

3. The setting: the blue train. Christie uses travel in her mysteries quite a lot, and this will not be Poirot's only encounter with a mystery on a train (I'm looking at you, Orient Express). What do you think of the plot and the setting?

Incidentally, this marks the first time St. Mary Mead is mentioned in a Christie novel, which we will visit soon as the home of Miss Marple!

willaful I was surprised it was St. Mary Mead, I don't remember ever noticing that before! At first I thought, “no it's not!“ but then I remembered that at least a decade separates the stories. 3mo

Cuilin Oh, the train is almost the best part of the whole book. I love a train journey. And a mystery on a train even better!!! 3mo

suvata The train's isolation (a moving, enclosed space) amplifies suspense, as the murderer must be among the passengers, with no immediate escape. This mirrors Christie's knack for using travel settings (trains, boats, planes) to trap suspects and victims together, forcing secrets to surface. 3mo

2. In the first question, we compared the novel to prior Poirot novels, but I want to dive a little deeper into Poirot. In The Big Four, Poirot had a persona of an action hero. In this one, he's back to the Poirot we know. We're also experiencing Poirot without the aid of Hastings. Do you miss Hastings in this one? What can we glean from Poirot's character without the help of Hastings? #ChristiesCapers #AgathaChristieClubR3

Aims42 I thought I would miss Hastings, but I actually enjoyed Poirot going solo in this story. And I‘m really happy that Poirot was just as sassy without Hastings as he is with him 😆 3mo

kspenmoll I did not miss Hastings- I know he is a foil for Poirot but sometimes he irritates & distracts me. 3mo

TheAromaofBooks I actually love Hastings, so I always miss him, but since he wasn't there we were able to get a lot of scenes that he wouldn't have been privy to. 3mo

Agatha Christie: An Elusive Woman

1. This is our 6th book featuring Poirot (5th novel plus a collection of short stories). What did you think of this one? How does it compare to the prior Poirot novels we read?

A few facts:

*Christie hated this novel though it was well received by critics.
*The idea came from her 1923 short story The Plymouth Express.
*She was writing this as she grieved her mother's passing & was divorcing her husband.

Aims42 Your facts totally surprised me 🤯 I‘m shocked she didn‘t particularly love this one, I thought it was really well done! I liked how she established the characters before Poirot appeared. And I would have no idea she was grieving while writing this. 3mo

kspenmoll I agree with @Aims42 in that I too liked how she introduced the characters before Poirot came on the scene. He was more likable to me than in previous books. I wonder if her writing while grieving her mother & her marriage gave her an escape. (edited) 3mo

OutsmartYourShelf Interesting that Christie was grieving both her mother & the divorce from her husband, perhaps explains the fact that I thought it wasn't one of her better books. It felt a little distracted, deservedly so now knowing the circumstances. 3mo

willaful I'd read that Christie thought it her worst book and I definitely don't agree. Still think it's one of her lesser ones. I haven't read it in so long, I managed to forget the ending!

TheAromaofBooks The divorce part is interesting, because Christie actually frequently has a lil romance/HEA in her books - but here the ending is kind of vague and open-ended regarding the romantic elements. 3mo

Cuilin Like everybody else, I‘m a bit surprised about Christie not liking this one. Maybe it reminded her of a time she doesn‘t like to think about. 3mo

suvata This one has Christie's signature knack for misdirection, but it feels a bit slower and less polished than, say, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd or Murder on the Links. 3mo

Sparklemn @kspenmoll I loved that he appeared later on in the story. I wasn‘t sure if this was common. I‘ve watched more movies based on the books than the actual books. In the movies, we often meet him in the first scene or two. (edited) 3mo

MariaW Getting back on track again with the monthly reading. I did know the facts surrounding the novel because I‘ve read Worsley‘s biography on Christie. In general for us as a reader it is difficult to understand the mystery if we do not get all the information (see Ada Mason), so we cannot come to the same conclusions ourselves. So for me it is not the best of her murder mysteries.

PICK! PICK! PICK!! This was sooooo needed after my “meh” feelings of Agatha‘s previous title (The Big Four) - I loved this one! Poirot was so sassy 😆 At first I was annoyed he didn‘t appear on page 1, but I think it actually made me stick with this book to get hooked waiting for him. I see what you (possibly?) did there, Agatha 😏

RaeLovesToRead The Big Four really is the worst Agatha Christie book that I've read 😄 I'm up to Dumb Witness in my Poirot along. It was one of my favourite episodes so hopefully it'll be enjoyable! 3mo

“He shifted a little and looked around him uneasily - to find Poirot almost at his elbow with a beaming innocent face”. This quote instantly made me think of The Office episode with this scene and I literally burst out laughing 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love Poirot so much!!

I‘ve noticed recently when listening to these Agatha Christie books on Audible that Richard Armitage stopped narrating them. He only narrated a few of them and then he stopped. Now the only narrator I‘m listening to is Hugh Fraser. Hugh Fraser has a nice voice but I got used to listening to Richard Armitage. I miss Richard Armitage‘s voice. I wish he would‘ve continued narrating these stories.

BookNook Got onto this bandwagon late. I've enjoyed many of ACs mysteries over the past many years and it will be interesting to go through them in order of publication as I can squeeze them in between my other stacked books. I love the way she has of “tickling the little grey cells“. 4mo

Short Review: This was an odd Poirot book for me, he doesn't appear for the first few chapters & when he does he seems to be more of a side character to Katherine Grey. The mystery itself was textbook Christie but it just didn't seem to work as well as some of her other books. I think the problem for me is that I just didn't like Katherine Grey. Don't know why, just didn't. 3.5🌟

TWs: racism/xenophobia, internalised misogyny.

I finished another Poriot murder mystery. This time the point of view wasn‘t the one of Hastings, but the one of Katherine. She does have her own suspicions, even though she does not have all the information of Poirot. But in the end she comes to the same conclusion on her own - without Poirot. 😂
