Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932
Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932: A Novel | Francine Prose
6 posts | 10 read | 11 to read
A richly imagined and stunningly inventive literary masterpiece of love, art, and betrayal, exploring the genesis of evil, the unforeseen consequences of love, and the ultimate unreliability of storytelling itself. Paris in the 1920s shimmers with excitement, dissipation, and freedom. It is a place of intoxicating ambition, passion, art, and discontent, where louche jazz venues like the Chameleon Club draw expats, artists, libertines, and parvenus looking to indulge their true selves. It is at the Chameleon where the striking Lou Villars, an extraordinary athlete and scandalous cross-dressing lesbian, finds refuge among the clubs loyal denizens, including the rising Hungarian photographer Gabor Tsenyi, the socialite and art patron Baroness Lily de Rossignol; and the caustic American writer Lionel Maine. As the years pass, their fortunesand the world itselfevolve. Lou falls desperately in love and finds success as a race car driver. Gabor builds his reputation with startlingly vivid and imaginative photographs, including a haunting portrait of Lou and her lover, which will resonate through all their lives. As the exuberant twenties give way to darker times, Lou experiences another metamorphosissparked by tumultuous eventsthat will warp her earnest desire for love and approval into something far more.

Oh look! Another book that has been on my shelves unread for 5+ years. Let‘s face it - I‘m an #easylover when it comes to books. #anglophileapril

vivastory What unread book has been on your shelf the longest? 6y
vivastory Mine is a tie between Catch 22 & Tenth of December. I bought both of them 4 years ago. Although I should qualify this with the fact that I have books I put in storage 5 years ago I still haven't read 😬 6y
Cinfhen Haha!! Maybe this was a case of Paris Syndrome 6y

Reading this sentence sent a chill down my spine. Her prose is so incredibly evocative.

I've always wondered what artists' muses felt about works of art they inspired. For instance, did being immortalised in 'Death and the Maiden' make it easier for Wally Neuzil to accept that Schiele was marrying someone else? This line captures it so well.

I'm always impressed by authors who can write in another "voice" without it seeming like parody or ineptitude.Francine Prose nails her Henry Miller "voice " here , in my opinion , that seems like something he would write!
