The Birds, the Bees, and You and Me
The Birds, the Bees, and You and Me | Olivia Hinebaugh
6 posts | 6 read | 16 to read
A teen who's never even been kissed becomes her school's unofficial sex expert in Olivia Hinebaugh's fun, voice-y contemporary YA romance debut. Seventeen-year-old Lacey Burke feels like the last person on the planet who should be doling out sex advice. For starters, shes never even kissed anyone, and she hates breaking the rules. Up until now, she's been a straight-A music geek that no one even notices. All she cares about is jamming out with her best friends, Theo and Evita. But then everything changes. When Lacey sees first-hand how much damage the abstinence-only sex-ed curriculum of her school can do, she decides to take a stand and starts doling out wisdom and contraception to anyone who seeks her out in the girls' restroom. Meanwhile, things with Theo have become complicated, and soon Lacey is not just keeping everyone elses secrets, but her own as well.

What a delightful read! Girl power, doing battle with authority, music, friendship, an ace character who actually can talk about her identity, a pregnant teen who has her own story line, and making it cool to be interested in safe sex, consent, and all?

If this is what we can expect from young(er) authors, then we don‘t have to worry; this book was all the right things, with a sweet romance and personal journey on top. A must read for everyone.

PerksOfBeingABookworm I can‘t wait to read this book! I study sex education and consent as a grad student. I really hope that when I do read it, it lives up to the hype. 6y
Joanne1 Sounds like the perfect YA novel for this time. I‘ll add it to my list. 6y

I was intrigued by @Lovesbooks87 ‘s post about this over the weekend, so I got my hands on a copy and now that I‘m done with house chores I can sit down and read.

There are a lot of areas where my health classes were lacking, but an abstinence-only curriculum wasn‘t one of them. That said, four girls in my home room didn‘t finish 10th grade because even in 1992 my school urged pregnant teens to drop out.

Lovesbooks87 I hope you enjoy it! Can't wait to hear what you think about it! 6y

Lacey is in high school. Her high school teaches an abstinence only health class. She doesn't agree with it so her and her friends take it into their own hands and start educating their classmates about safe sex. Lacey is also trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life after school as well as trying to figure out her own love life. I felt this book was written really well and the author didn't hold anything back.

Lovesbooks87 This was my third book I completed during the #24b4monday readathon. 6y

bookishkai This looks fantastic-the book, not the fries. Although they look good too, but I like my fries sometimes with ranch and sometimes plain. Heading to buy the book ASAP! 6y

Lovesbooks87 @bookishkris it is really good. I think it is the kind of book teens need. Teaching just abstinence isn't helping anyone. Teens and even adults need to be educated and this book doesn't shy away from the facts! 6y
hes7 Mmm, French fries 😋 6y
