From the author of the acclaimed The Dry Grass of August comes a richly researched yet lyrical Southern-set novel that explores the conflicts of gentrificationa moving story of loss, love, and resilience. In 1961 Charlotte, North Carolina, the predominantly black neighborhood of Brooklyn is a bustling city within a city. Self-contained and vibrant, it has its own restaurants, schools, theaters, churches, and night clubs. There are shotgun shacks and poverty, along with well-maintained houses like the one Loraylee Hawkins shares with her young son, Hawk, her Uncle Ray, and her grandmother, Bibi. Loraylees love for Archibald Griffin, Hawks white father and manager of the cafeteria where she works, must be kept secret in the segregated South. Loraylee has heard rumors that the city plans to bulldoze her neighborhood, claiming its dilapidated and dangerous. The government promises to provide new housing and relocate businesses. But locals like Pastor Ebenezer Polk, whos facing the demolition of his church, know the value of Brooklyn does not lie in bricks and mortar. Generations have lived, loved, and died here, supporting and strengthening each other. Yet street by street, longtime residents are being forced out. And Loraylee, searching for a way to keep her family together, will form new alliancesand find an unexpected path that may yet lead her home.

I knew going into this that it probably wasn‘t going to love this as literary fiction is not my favorite genre. I didn‘t expect to dislike it as much as I do. It‘s supposedly a story about gentrification, one that plays out over and over in poor and minority neighborhoods, and the fact that it takes place here in Charlotte, was a big selling point. But so far (70%) it‘s about the lives of a handful of people who live in Brooklyn aka 2nd Ward. ⬇️

DGRachel I‘m sure this is meant to make us connect to the neighborhood in a way that we feel the loss of their homes in a more visceral way, but what it does for me is take a book that could have had a strong message and make it a book that pointlessly meanders through the seedier domestic details of peoples lives. The audiobook narrator doesn‘t help. But honestly, don‘t let my review discourage you. It‘s not a genre I enjoy and I only tried to read it ⬇️ 2y
DGRachel …for my library‘s Community Read 2022, as it‘s this year‘s signature read. YMMV 2y

My library system announced this year‘s Community Read selections. The tagged book is primary, but as in years previous, they have additional books for all age groups. I read last year‘s full list and loved them all, so I have high hopes for this March! I‘ve owned Pride for years, so now I‘ll finally get to stop putting it off. 😂 #communityread2022

Pickpick

Loraylee, Hawk, and Uncle Ray went from living in a sustainable neighborhood with stores, a doctor, a library, and a church all in walking distance, to having to look for affordable housing in segregated neighborhoods that offered none of those things. A good look at gentrification, connections, community, and interracial relationships in 1961 Charlotte, North Carolina.
