Women Rowing North
Women Rowing North: Navigating Lifes Currents and Flourishing As We Age | Mary Pipher
11 posts | 9 read | 16 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of Reviving Ophelia, a guide to wisdom, authenticity, and bliss for women as they age. Women growing older contend with ageism, misogyny, and loss. Yet as Mary Pipher shows, most older women are deeply happy and filled with gratitude for the gifts of life. Their struggles help them grow into the authentic, empathetic, and wise people they have always wanted to be. In Women Rowing North, Pipher offers a timely examination of the cultural and developmental issues women face as they age. Drawing on her own experience as daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, caregiver, clinical psychologist, and cultural anthropologist, she explores ways women can cultivate resilient responses to the challenges they face. "If we can keep our wits about us, think clearly, and manage our emotions skillfully," Pipher writes, "we will experience a joyous time of our lives. If we have planned carefully and packed properly, if we have good maps and guides, the journey can be transcendent."

I have no idea how I managed to pick up this book but boy am I glad I did! This isn‘t a difficult read. It‘s chock full of wisdom collected from personal stories, stories shared by friends and clients, and through her copious encounters with books. We are all blessed by older women in our lives. Reading this helped me appreciate that even more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am enjoying this book written by the author of Reviving Ophelia. This one explains aging and how older women fit into their own lives, communities, and the world.

This is one of those books that will speak to you only if you‘re in the right place. I felt like a guest at a gathering where I was slightly out of place - this isn‘t my time for this book, but I welcomed being surrounded by the stories of these women. Pipher writes tenderly and with open eyes about aging and its blessings and challenges.

1/~15 pictures of inside the Amazon store! A lot of people have asked what it‘s like inside one, so why not show instead of tell. 😁👍🏻👍🏻

One thing that they do better than any other bookstore I‘ve been in (I heard Powell‘s is similar—can‘t wait to visit Powell‘s someday!) is displays. As you know, I love displays 😆. Amazon is awesome at it!

valeriegeary Powell's slays at displays. I always end up grabbing way more books than I came in for because there are so many interesting ones just staring you in the face! 😄 6y
Hooked_on_books Powell‘s displays are amazing. I always find good stuff through them. 6y
MelissaSue81 I just flipped through all your pics from the amazon store and you did a great job showing it to us. Is it ALL displays with categories like this? Or are there normal shelves sorted by author or whatever too? 6y

Caroline2 Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing! 😀 6y
MrBook @MelissaSue81 Glad you like it ☺️🤗! No, there‘s plenty of regular shelves too. I‘m just drawn to displays 🙈☺️. They have a tech section too in one corner of the store. 6y
MrBook @valeriegeary @Hooked_on_books See, this is why I need to visit Powell‘s. 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
MrBook @Caroline2 Very glad you like! ☺️🤗 6y

I‘m all in for a “boomer bible.” I never saw myself growing old, but here I am. I was delighted to see that my small local library owns this and I‘ll patiently wait for the book to be returned to the library by some other older woman. 😂😂

Crazeedi Here's to us "older wiser women" 6y

Suet624 @Mdargusch ha ha. Apparently the book makes us feel better about getting older. 💪🏼 🤪 6y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Yes! “Older” not “old” @suet624 @Mdargusch (edited) 6y
Suet624 @Joyfulmimi haha. I spend my weekdays with a 1 and 2 year old. I‘m not sure if it helps me feel older or younger. Some days I feel both. 6y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Awww...I would certainly take care of my grandkids everyday if I won the lottery. I soon will have 4. There‘s a whole chapter titled “Grandmothers” in the book. I am counting the days until my retirement @Suet624 (edited) 6y
minkyb Funny how the “old” thing sneaks up on you. 6y

I can‘t write a review precious enough to capture what this book has done for me. Although an avid reader, few books have touched me emotionally like this one has. Mary Pipher has been like a dear sister having a sacred conversation with me. She really, really understands this 64 yr old woman, as I truly understand her, especially since we are both psychologists “Let us embrace everything...as we navigate this last stretch of the river”⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

mcipher I haven‘t thought of her in years, but I remember one of her books being so precious and life changing for me! 6y

I‘m not a Boomer, I‘m generation X, but this book makes me glad to be a woman in a way that nothing else has ever done, except nursing babies. It‘s like five self-help books rolled into one and reminds me of Madeline L‘Engle and Anne LaMott. Deep, relevant, brilliant. #selfhelp #aging #feminism
