I'm always looking for versions of folktales and fairytales to add to my 398.2s, but the use of the word "original" is an instant turn-off. There are over 500 versions of Cinderella, and if we define "hero" like J. Campbell, we know she is the hero, not the prince. He does not rescue her. She is transformed. Her rise in status via marriage suited pre 21st C convention. So it's nice to have a modern version.

mandarchy But I had a problem with the mouse who wanted to return to being a mouse because she had children and the coach woman who wanted to remain a woman because her children were grown. It set the book back 50 years when a woman's value was determined by her ability to bear and keep children. Children are great, by they don't define us. 14mo

I loved this short fairytale retelling (or revolution) where Cinderella is not an orphan but the daughter of a (long missing) sea captain and a judge (who has been away from home for some time) but still a victim of a grasping stepmother. Where the animals transformed to take Cinderella are given a choice to stay as they are or to return to how they were. With a Prince who yearns for friendship and stepsisters who learn the error of their ways.

IMDb.com Cinderella 2015
This short novel is an alternate story of Cinderella for modern times 🤣 and amusing, but not earth/shattering 😉

"No, said the dancing teacher in their house full of music, and
No, said the blacksmith as she worked iron at her forge, and
No, said the bird doctor as he fixed a sparrow's wing."
It's the little things. Love the pronoun choices here. ?

I was absolutely delighted by Rebecca Solnit‘s first children‘s book, a retelling of the Cinderella story. Can‘t wait for kids to be able to enjoy this updated fairy tale come May!

Leading cultural critic Rebecca Solnit‘s first book for children expands the familiar fairy tale of Cinderella into a story of equality, choice, and meaningful work—beautiful dress and magical glass slippers included!

The writer often described as the "voice of the resistance" rewrites the fairy tale Cinderella to reflect more modern and progressive values such as feminism and marriage rights. Using classic illustrations by Arthur Rackham, this update feels familiar and satisfying while losing some of its problematic elements to contemporary readers.

[I received an advanced e-galley through Edelweiss. It is due to be published May 7, 2019.]
