Inspector Morse: The first three novels
Inspector Morse: The first three novels | Colin Dexter
2 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Featuring the first three books in this classic crime series starring Inspector Morse: Last Bus to Woodstock, Last Seen Wearing and The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn. Last Bus to Woodstock: The death of Sylvia Kaye figured dramatically in Thursday afternoon's edition of the Oxford Mail. By Friday evening Inspector Morse had informed the nation that the police were looking for a dangerous man facing charges of wilful murder, sexual assault and rape. But as the obvious leads fade into twilight and darkness, Morse becomes more and more convinced that passion holds the key . . . Last Seen Wearing: Morse was beset by a nagging feeling. Most of his fanciful notions about the Taylor girl had evaporated and he had begun to suspect that further investigation into Valeries disappearance would involve little more than sober and tedious routine . . . The statements before Inspector Morse appeared to confirm the bald, simple truth. After leaving home to return to school, teenager Valerie Taylor had completely vanished, and the trail had gone cold. Until two years, three months and two days after Valeries disappearance, somebody decides to supply some surprising new evidence for the case . . . The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn. Morse had never ceased to wonder why, with the staggering advances in medical science, all pronouncements concerning times of death seemed so disconcertingly vague. The newly appointed member of the Oxford Examinations Syndicate was deaf, provincial and gifted. Now he is dead . . . And his murder, in his north Oxford home, proves to be the start of a formidably labyrinthine case for Chief Inspector Morse, as he tries to track down the killer through the insular and bitchy world of the Oxford Colleges . . .

Yesterday was Friday and Friday is the gentleman‘s last name, pictured on the right, with young Endeavour Morse. Love watching these mysteries on PBS! Characters based off of Colin Dexter‘s books; tagged.

*edited to correct the detective‘s name-it‘s really Thursday not Friday.*

GypsyKat Cool! 6y

Anyone else watching Endeavor? It's sooooo good! Saturday night just got better. Set in the early 1960s, which is right up my alley. Never really a huge fan of Morse, but maybe I didn't give him a chance. Either way I've been meaning to tackle the Colin Dexter series for ages!

LauraBrook Love this series - the actor who plays Endeavour is amazing! Can't wait for the new season. (edited) 8y
rabbitprincess I love Endeavour! He was my gateway into the Morse world, mainly because of Roger Allam (Thursday) and the Sixties setting 😍 8y
EvieBee @LauraBrook I don't know where I have been! I am always looking for a series like this to watch. He is amazing! As is Thursday. I just started it and keep trying to pace myself so it last bit...sigh. 😁 8y

EvieBee @rabbitprincess Thursday is awesome! That pilot episode was so strong. Couldn't figure him out at first. But yes, all the feels! When I found out Inspector Lewis wasn't going to continue I was so bummed. So finally decided to try Endeavor. 8y
rabbitprincess @EvieBee84 If I could have an ideal TV dad, it would be Thursday ♥️ 8y
EvieBee @rabbitprincess Aww! I can see that. 8y
LauraBrook Thursday is pretty great. And if you're looking for more tv shows like this, @EvieBee84 I'm pretty sure @rabbitprincess and I could give you some decent lists! 8y
EvieBee @LauraBrook @rabbitprincess Please do! I've seen quite a few but I keep coming back to my staple favorites: Inspector Lewis and Midsomer Murders. Shows in this vein are so comforting to me! (edited) 8y
LauraBrook @EvieBee84 Me too! I'll put my thinking cap on tonight and work on a list tomorrow morning. British tv shows have been a lifelong love - that's what I get with Anglophile parents and grandparents! 😊 Sleep well! 8y
EvieBee @LauraBrook Thank you so much! 8y
Moray_Reads I love it but I've fallen behind! 8y
MamaGina Love LOVE this show ... also love Morse and the Inspector Lewis series 🤓 8y
MamaGina I'd also recommend George Gently if you love 1960's settings, similar in style to Endeavor. 8y
Magslhalliday Every episode of Endeavour to date had a cameo from Colin Dexter in it: the production crew were heartbroken when he died. 8y
EvieBee @Moray_Reads That happens! There's so much to read AND watch! 8y
EvieBee @MamaGina I'm going to give the Morse series another try, definitely due to Endeavor. I'll have to check outa George Gently. Thank you! 8y
EvieBee @Magslhalliday Really?! I'll have to keep an eye out. 8y
Magslhalliday @EvieBee84 Abigail Thaw, who plays the journalist, is John Thaw's daughter. And his wife, Sheila Hancock, is in the most recent series (UK). It's my massive warm hug of a programme. ;) 8y
