Pickpick

From 16 to in their 50s, from high school, college, & church, from as close as Mississippi, Kentucky, & Tennessee & as far away as Massachusetts, Ohio, California, & immigrants from Belgium, the Netherlands, & Germany to later in life becoming truck drivers, teachers, business owners, Congressmen & more, came these Freedom Riders.
⬇️

megnews To look into their eyes in mugshots then & distinguished photos today and hear their inspiration to ride, their fears, their determination, their experiences is to hear from the unsung heroes of American History. Would make an excellent addition to history curriculum. I wouldn‘t have known of this if not for #NewYearWhoDis. Excellent. Highly recommend. (edited) 5y

Ms. White‘s biography lists her arrests like badges of honor. 👊

Butterfinger Way to go Miss Lula. I did that once for a bulletin board. I put the arrest photos of Civil Rights activists and I think the heading was Can you find the mom, preacher, fifteen year old student? I miss teaching social studies. 5y

Many of the white participants in the Freedom Rides express similar sentiments that they felt relatively safe, felt fairly certain there would be no long term consequences for participation, and were aware that was not true for African-American participants.

I‘m finding this book fascinating. So much worthy of sharing.

“We want our freedom, and we want it now.”

Sharpeipup How do you like it so far? 5y
megnews @Sharpeipup it‘s great! You go your whole life learning about the Freedom Rides but this turns the group into individuals with lives before & after. The chance to hear their individual motivations & experiences is amazing. 5y
