The Collected Stories of Grace Paley | Grace Paley

'This is a collection full of energy and stunning, quiet innovation ... it spills over with contempt, raucous humour, sadness and generosity. In it, life and language are synonymous, and there is no higher praise. What a wonderful book' Ali Smith Here are all Grace Paley's classic stories in one volume. Paley's quirky, boisterous characters and rich use of language won her readers' hearts and secured her place as one of America's most accomplished short-story writers. Her stories are united by her signature interweaving of personal and political truths, her extraordinary capacity for empathy and her pointed depiction of the small and large events that make up daily life. Books included in the VMC 40th anniversary series include: Frost in May by Antonia White; The Collected Stories of Grace Paley; Fire from Heaven by Mary Renault; The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter; The Weather in the Streets by Rosamond Lehmann; Deep Water by Patricia Highsmith; The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West; Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston; Heartburn by Nora Ephron; The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy; Memento Mori by Muriel Spark; A View of the Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor; and Faces in the Water by Janet Frame

Pickpick

I didn't have the easiest time with this collection, but I respected Paley's writing, very dense but funny too. The stories are slices of life, often involving reoccurring characters, a group of women from New York who are friends and activists, though the stories are less concerned with politics than their relationships. Despite the realist overtones, conversations often veer into strange philosophical territory that isn't easy to parse.

I have only read or listened to a handful of her stories, and loved them. So quirkily unique. She was scheduled to attend AWP in Vancouver when I lived there about a decade ago but at the last minute was too ill to come.

She's another writer I would like to do a intensive slow read of some day.

Suet624 She lived in Vermont so there were many articles written about her by local writers. I liked this article: http://www.vermontwoman.com/articles/2007/0507/GracePaley.html 8y
shawnmooney @Suet624 Wow, I started it, then realized how rich and lengthy it is, so I will definitely go back and finish it when I have time. Thanks! 8y

"Also, you‘ll see, you‘ll be lucky in this life to have something you must do to take your mind off all the things you didn‘t do." -- crying all day to Grace Paley, as usual
