41: A Portrait of My Father | George W. Bush
10 posts | 16 read | 9 to read
George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, has authored a personal biography of his father, George H. W. Bush, the 41st President. Forty-three men have served as President of the United States. Countless books have been written about them. But never before has a President told the story of his father, another President, through his own eyes and in his own words. A unique and intimate biography, the book covers the entire scope of the elder President Bush’s life and career, including his service in the Pacific during World War II, his pioneering work in the Texas oil business, and his political rise as a Congressman, U.S. Representative to China and the United Nations, CIA Director, Vice President, and President. The book shines new light on both the accomplished statesman and the warm, decent man known best by his family. In addition, George W. Bush discusses his father’s influence on him throughout his own life, from his childhood in West Texas to his early campaign trips with his father, and from his decision to go into politics to his own two-term Presidency.

My office is closed today for a day of Mourning, so I‘m watching the funeral and paying my respects at home.

My degree is in Political Science and I loved the executive branch (even the bad or unknown Presidents). Regardless of how people feel about the Bush family politics, this was a really sweet book from a son's perspective on his dad. Although I could put a dozen books about Presidents here, this was the one I could reach 😂

saguarosally Poli Sci majors unite! (Although I have to admit I have never come close to using such a degree. 😄) 8y
katycronk @saguarosally yesssss! It was a lot of fun at the time, but I'm also not in the field 8y
saguarosally @katycronk I was studying Poli Sci right through the 2000 elections. An interesting time for sure. 8y
katycronk @saguarosally I studied during the 2008 elections. Very interesting times for sure. I wish I was studying during the 2016 elections as well. I'm sure my professors went bonkers during it 8y

I didn't know much about George H.W. Bush, as his time in office ended when I was a baby. This book provides loving insight to the type of father, grandfather, and politician Bush Sr. was and still is. As it's written by his son, it's obviously not an objective portrayal, but that doesn't really affect how you read it. Overall, it was nice to read a book about a president that didn't feel like it carried some greater political agenda.

I'm trying to learn more about all of the presidents regardless of how I feel about their actions while in office. George H. W. Bush finished his presidency when I was 2, so I don't know much about him which led me to this book. Which I'll get to eventually. Someday. Hopefully. #PresidentialReads

LitLogophile Have you heard of the podcast, Presidents are People Too, on Audible? It's a 10000/10. 8y
JacintaMCarter @lostlogophile I have not. I'll have to check it out. 8y
LitLogophile It's perfect! Obscure presidential history of all 45, told by a first ladies' historian & former head writer of The Daily Show. I'm on the same journey as you, to learn as much as I can about our former POTUSes, and it has gotten me off to the best start. 8y
Aswenson Just finished Destiny of the Republic about Garfield... sooooo good, and a pretty quick read. 8y

I loved this for what it is, a beautiful and heartfelt love letter from a son to a father he so clearly adores.
