The Making of a Manager
The Making of a Manager: What to Do When Everyone Looks to You | Julie Zhuo
Congratulations, you're a manager! After you pop the champagne, accept the shiny new title, and step into this thrilling next chapter of your career, the truth descends like a fog: you don't really know what you're doing. That's exactly how Julie Zhuo felt when she became a rookie manager at the age of 25. She stared at a long list of logistics--from hiring to firing, from meeting to messaging, from planning to pitching--and faced a thousand questions and uncertainties. How was she supposed to spin teamwork into value? How could she be a good steward of her reports' careers? What was the secret to leading with confidence in new and unexpected situations? Now, having managed dozens of teams spanning tens to hundreds of people, Julie knows the most important lesson of all: great managers are made, not born. If you care enough to be reading this, then you care enough to be a great manager., Julie knows the most important lesson of all: great managers are made, not born. This was definitely the management book I was looking for! It was so detailed, had so much information but in a readable and not overwhelming manner. She does talk about Facebook a lot and I hate Facebook, but that‘s where she works, so it was understandable. I definitely recommend this book for new or experienced managers.

I don‘t remember if someone recommended this on Litsy or if I found it on GoodReads.

Most useful management book I‘ve read yet. So often I feel like nothing in these will work in my job (in a busy newsroom) but actually this has a fair few things that I will try and implement but also a lot of encouraging stuff about mindset. I liked.

I‘m not a big reader of books to help me in my job, but recently I‘ve been feeling a big insecure about my management skills. I blame my autumn (fall!) in America where everyone is so... together. Anyway, this popped up in an email from NetGalley at just the right tome. I‘ll keep you all posted.

saguarosally Together in America? I‘m curious. That‘s not my thought on America, but then again I‘ve been here a lifetime. 5y
Verity @saguarosally together as in put together and hyper competent rather than everyone getting along. 5y
saguarosally @Verity That‘s something that depends on where you are at in America. Valuing skill is common in America but not universal. 5y
Verity @saguarosally I was in Washington DC... 5y
Andrea313 Glad to know about this title, as someone who has been feeling the same way lately! 5y
