The Mortification of Fovea Munson
The Mortification of Fovea Munson | Mary Winn Heider
3 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Fovea Munson is nobody's Igor. True, her parents own a cadaver lab where they perform surgeries on dead bodies. And yes, that makes her gross by association, at least according to everyone in seventh grade. And sure, Fovea's stuck working at the lab now that her summer camp plans have fallen through. But she is by no means Dr. Frankenstein's snuffling assistant! That is, until three disembodied heads, left to thaw in the wet lab, start talking. To her. Out loud. What seems like a nightmare, or bizarre hallucination, is not. Fovea is somebody's Igor, all right. Three somebodies, actually. And they need a favor. With a madcap sense of humor and a lot of heart (not to mention other body parts), this is a story about finding oneself, finding one's friends, and embracing the moment.

Young readers looking for a story about a middle schooler forced to work in her parents‘ cadaver lab when her summer plans fall through—and who among them isn‘t?!?—have to look no further. Heider has craft an uproariously funny story with a heaping side of “those disembodied talking heads want what exactly?” about friendship (those who really aren‘t & those who might be), regrets, dreams, & living life to its fullest. A fun, poignant read.

@sblbooks I normally run kids and ya book clubs. If I did all the choosing here would be my list. The only real rule I have is to not read the same genre twice (even if it kills me).

1. Classic- SecretGarden
2. Humor- Mortification of fovea Munson
3. Horror- Small Spaces
4. Sci-fi- Sal and Gabi
5. Fantasy- Dark Crystal
6. Political- prince & Dressmaker
7. Drama- invisible Emmie

LibrarianRyan 8. Romance- To Nightowl...
9. Mystery- westing Game
10. Historical- playing Atari w/ Saddam Hussein

Crazeedi Such a thoughtful list! Nice! 5y
LibrarianRyan @Crazeedi when I used to really do this we always held a book vote. The kids got the top 3 they voted for even if I hated it. I got my top 3. The last three were to fill in needed genres. 5y

Peddler410 Interesting choice for Romance, I wouldn‘t have thought of that one for that genre. I loved the book. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Peddler410 me to. Romance is love and love comes in all forms not just romantic love. But you have the aspect of the dads falling in and out of romantic love as well as the sisterly love they have for each other. I think it could lead to some great conversations. 5y
Chrissyreadit I love these choices! 5y
Avanders Any group that features the Westing Game is good w me! 🎃 5y

Quirky and fun, this MG novel deals with the various aspects of friendship and what that word means. It just also happens to be set in a family medical lab and feature three bodiless heads as characters. One of my favorite things about this was the fact that after the shock of the fact that a bodiless head could talk, no one asked any questions. They just accepted them as is and went on about their days. Ah for the suspended disbelief of youth...
